My Snap On toolbox upgrade has been done and I have to say that although SO boxes may seem expensive initially you have to look at the whole picture.

Previous setup:

This consisted of a KR660B roll cab & a KR650 top chest. They were both around 22 years old but in very good condition for their age. There were the usual scratches, nicks and worn paint on the drawer & box edges but no dings or rust. They both had bearing slides except for the 7 smaller drawers on the top box. I really liked this setup with all of the drawers as it made organization pretty nice. I decided to upgrade as I had outgrown this setup. It was pretty much filled to the brim.

I spoke to my Snap On dealer about some options and because of space considerations in my garage I decided that 24" was as deep as I could go without causing problems. He said that he had a new, in the crate KRL722 and a used but in excellent condition KRL791 that would work out well, plus he would take my old boxes in trade. Both were in black which is what I really wanted but the top box had the Kevin Harvick graphics which I really didn't care for. After some research here I decided move forward with the deal and remove the graphics (which I detailed on a thread a couple of weeks ago) and it came out really well, albeit with a lot of elbow grease.

So with my trade in I got the new setup for $1995.00. I had thought about selling my old setup but with the prices that I've seen on KR660's & KR650's, I figured that I was better off trading them in. Realistically I would have been lucky to get maybe $800 for them unless someone out there was specifically looking for these particular models. Now I know that there are some deals to be found on CL and so forth but I have been looking for a black top and bottom for quite awhile (only locally +/- 150mi) and I've only found one KRL761/791 top and bottom in black (Hot Rod edition, and again I wasn't into the graphics) for a little over 2K but there was a bit of damage to the bottom box and he had the box pinstriped Von Dutch style. All of the other ones that I've seen have either been another color, beat down or way too expensive. Another plus is that my new box was delivered to me and my old one picked up. I didn't even have to think about warming up the truck.

Now I know that $2K-3K for a "box" that you just put your tools in may sound like a lot, but I've had my 20+ year old boxes for about 9 years or so and on top of performing well and holding up great I was able to trade them in for a substantial credit (way more then I originally paid for them) towards my new boxes. I never thought I would outgrow my last setup but it's nice to know that if I outgrow my new setup I shouldn't have a problem recouping my investment towards a larger box in the future. Needless to say as long as I am able, my toolbox will always be a Snap On.

I really don't think you would have done much better selling your old boxes privately. Your dealer really gave you a great deal. The new set up is really nice.

That was my thinking as well. Like I stated before, unless someone was specifically looking for my setup it would be hard for someone to justify spending $1000+ on 20+ year old boxes.

Yeah my dealer really hooked me up, and in turn earned a customer for life.

Thats one sweet deal if it only cost you 2k. Also we need some drawer pictures now!!

It was $1995 plus my old boxes as a trade in, which realistically, were probably worth around $800 or so. I'm still working on organizing all of my stuff as going from 27 drawers to 19 is making me rethink how and what to put where. I'm looking into some wrench rack systems so hopefully I can consolidate 3 drawers of wrenches into 2.

Here are pictures of some of the drawers:

Almost looks like you still need a bigger box.

Can't say that the thought of needing an even bigger box hasn't crossed my mind! Hopefully my wife will never read this thread (or figure out how to operate the lock-n-roll drawers). So far I've got about 1 and a half large drawers empty and one and a half small ones with some BS in them, plus a ton of room in the upper storage area (although I still have some other stuff that needs to go in the box). As I mentioned above I'm hoping that with the use of some wrench racks I'll be able to free up another drawer. I'm still in the process of organizing everything, but I've also discovered in this process how much **** I have.
