All my good tools are at work when I upgrade I take the old tools to my home collection. Hate using old tools when you know you have much better ones at work but as long as they get the job done that's what counts

When I got back into tools about 8 years ago I'd bought a used but like new unused 250 pce set of craftsman tools to start with. Now my kit is all Snap-On and I was able to sell the craftsman for what I'd paid. I have several cool old tote boxes I'd picked up because I liked them and they are now filled with my old tools I've replaced with Snap-On. I have a drawer full of other tools I've replaced and I keep them in case I need to bring or weld up a special tool. I'll give away sets or pieces when I run into people who need them.

I must part of the minority. I don't give a second thought to selling tools when I upgrade them. I have several sets of tools (home garage, work van, and travel boxes) but don't feel it necessary to have more than a few extras of anything.

My first set of tools as a teenager was stolen, part of the replacement set was later stolen. My dad for the most part had junk tools and the few good pieces were carted off by family. The end result is no emotional attachment.

I started flipping tools a few years ago as a hobby, so I generally view most tool purchases now as temporary with an eye to making a few bucks. I do have a few favorites like my Rockwell 100 router and 126 door planer kit. I bought and sold three or four of those kits to get to the one I might keep a while.

I gave a few tools away but the young guy treated them as disposable for the most , he has probably lost most of them by now.

Hey buddy wanna buy some tools?

I have upgraded a majority of my tools and have had tools for over 50 years. I can WTF is that to most mechanical people. My dad's and my old crapsman stuff is reposing under the back deck waiting for a labor exchange. Most likely my intern will work a few days for me doing non racing work and leave with a pile of tools. Mostly give away or permanent loan or in the case of old tool boxes the scrap heap. Can not be bothered to deal with CL loons or fleabay with paypal issues. At this point thing get given away face to face or placed in deep storage or tossed.
I had sent a tester to a GJ member with the understanding that you would send me something that my son wants. But this person found that request too difficult. So I have rather soured on giving anything away that I am not comped first.

Do you have doubles in what you upgraded to? Are they different lengths?
Add them to your new stuff.
If you new set has redundancy and depth, then next would be your roadbox. Personally, IMO you are several sets away from donating. Things break, and friends forget to return stuff.
If that neighbor kid needs a tool? Lend him one.
Better yet, lend it to him and give him your time. You might explain how the box end gets the lion's share of the work and why.

I keep them all. The old stuff is split in my cabinet at home, some at work and in my trucks as emergency.

Keep them. I have built sets for friends. Building a set for my 5 year old grandson when he wants to help me work on things. I "keep" them for him so he still has them afterwards.

What people call "junk tools" these days actually still have a lot of usefulness.

I would never use my Snap On screwdriver as a prybar, but my Stanley screwdriver is always up to the task.

I've given a ton of my old tools to family and also my neighbor's kids. I've also sold some on CL/Ebay and here. Just depends on the tool, I guess.

Depends on what they are. Good stuff I tend to keep, rarely I sell, or give to special people whom I deem worthy. Cheap junk sometimes gets given away or sold. The best use for cheap junk I've found is throw together a set, put it in a box, and use them for loaners.

Don't you think you should have bought them instead?
