So we moved the last weekend of May, first weekend of June our little guy Jacob made an appearance. Needless to say the garage has been very low on the totem pole with a new house and a new kid.

I finally managed to get enough time to clean out 90% of the moving mess and see what really needs doing and where I am going to start. Garage is a basic 20' x 24' but it does have a 12' x 16' extension on the rear. 100 amp sub panel and service, no leaks and is structurally sound.

I know pictures are mandatory so here it is before I finished sweeping and tossing the **** into the trash. The fish tank will be going into the house once I've finished the dining room updates and laundry room renovation. Same deal with the dining room table (currently using the dining room as our office while the office/laundry room gets renovation).

The most immediate need is the wiring, right now there are 6 x 20 amp breakers being used in the panel, 4 of those breakers are wired to run either an individual outlet or security light. My plan over the coming weeks is to completely rewire the whole garage.

Each side of the main garage will get a 20 amp circuit with 10 outlets each. The ceiling will get a 15 amp circuit with another 10 outlets split into two sets of 5 outlets on switches, Costco or Sams club LED lighting, 10 for now and room for more if required. The extension portion of the garage will get it's own 20 amp circuit split into 8 outlets and 2 switched outlets in the ceiling for lighting. I'll also drop a pair of 240 volt circuits somewhere in the main portion, one for the welder/plasma cutter and one for heat. Not sure of the locations of these yet until I play with layouts a little more.

There will only be me working so running multiple tools at the same time is going to be limited and the biggest load will likely be lighting, welder and heat all at the same time.

The main garage will get insulated, probably next spring and then walls and ceiling finished and painted. The extension portion is currently holding the yard stuff and my fishing gear. The plan for that is to get a garden shed built to take all of the yard tools, move the fishing gear into the basement and turn the extension into a wood shop.

Flooring will probably end up being some form of epoxy, not that far into planning yet. The floor is in ok shape, one side far better than the other, I'll want a finish that I can redo as required as there will be welding and cutting done inside. The garage will be used as a workshop so normally no parking inside assuming I don't fall into a project car/truck.

The garage looks great. It will make you a wonderful shop to work in and I really like the size. I am looking forward to your organization and set up.

Best Regards

Managed to find time to get the 2 x 20 amp circuits wired up and tested over the weekend. Small steps, but you are no more than 4 feet from an outlet now. Next weekend will be adding the ceiling outlets for lighting, and pulling more of the nails, screws and bolts out.

Google Maps tells me you are just a few miles from Lake Ontario. I'll bet it gets cold out in that shop/garage in the winter. Do you think you will be able to work productively out there this winter?

Unlikely that there will be much productivity over the winter. With everything else that is going on I honestly think getting insulation in will have to wait until spring. It also depends on if it's just cold or if it's as brutal as last winter.

Having said that, if there is any emergency car repairs then I will have to **** it up and deal with the cold. I'm hoping to have the 240v wiring all done and that Santa brings me a shop heater which might make more productivity happen.

So I broke down and decided to look over at Ebay to see what sort of LED lights were on offer. Found some that were rated at roughly 50 % of the Sams Club LED's but the price was extremely good. Decided to take a chance and ordered 20 single tubes that were delivered Friday. Spent today adding 2 x 4's into the ceiling for support and wired up half of the outlets. Decided to go with 5 rows of 3 lights and see what I thought, 10 lights on one switch and 5 lights on their own switch.

I'm impressed with the lights, very impressed actually. The only downside was the pig tail that came with the lights is only about 6 inches long and you need to supply your own plug. I ended up getting a better deal on 6ft extension cords than plugs, so ended up buying those and cutting the end off.

I still need to get the other 5 lights and outlets installed tomorrow. Coil and zip tie all of the light cords so they are neat and tidy. Clean up the mess the last couple of weekends have made and put all of my tools away.

I've bought 700 of those light zero issues, hp laptops use the same power cord
I placed one in the freezer over night and it lit right up when powered, dropped one off the roof no issue

Main portion of the garage completed with lights. 15 lights split 10/5 on two switches. Extremely happy with the amount and color of the lighting in here now. It's hard to capture the color and intensity on camera, might try a "garages at night" picture this evening.

I still need to pull out the previous owners spaghetti wiring, but for this weekend, sod it, time to watch some football and take a break.

Got the 240 volt lines in yesterday, one NEMA 6-30r for the heater and one NEMA 6-50r for the welder. That is the front part of the garage pretty much rewired. I still need to clean up the rear portion and re-connect the exterior outlets on a new circuit, that will end up being a spring project.

This is the heater I added: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003XOZN7A/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I have it temp hung for now but will figure out something more suitable in the next couple of weeks.

Family commitments between now and the New Year will minimize my time working on the garage. I'm hoping the heater will take the edge off the cold so that I can get to insulating and finishing the walls/ceiling sometime once we hit 2016.

Couple of quick night time shots, in reality there are only 9 of 15 lights putting out light as 2 rows are over the open garage door.

Garage progress is currently waiting for the holiday season and some house re-modelling to be done. Also need to diagnose a problem with the wife's Caliber before the end of the weekend .... silly roller skate.
