Urethane color coat

Does anyone think it is worth the extra cost to do a base coat in high solids urethane instead of high solids epoxy? I was quoted twice the price for the material cost for the urethane vs the expoy base coat and I was wondering if it is worth the upgrade. I would still use an epoxy primer, then the urethane color coat with paint flecks, and finally top with a clear urethane. I was told that although the DFT is thinner than high solids epoxy, urethane systems offer stronger resistance to chemicals spills and abrasion and all of that good stuff. Plus I wouldn't have to worry about UV yellowing and could coat the area outside my garage doot. Any thoughts? I guess I am just looking for validation, as I don't see too many others going this route.

You still risk water vapor transmission once you go outside.

This is not a bad idea but it will be a very thin system, any imperfections in concrete will be visible.

If it makes you feel better about your floor, go for it, but I think you'd be better off using epoxy for the base coat. As long as you topcoat with urethane, you will have the uv and chem. resistance no matter what is underneath it. Seems like a lot of extra cost for not much gain.

Are there any other benefits of using urethane vs epoxy for the base coat. I was told that industrial floors utilize urethane, so there have to be some advantages, right?

If you're doing a flake floor go with epoxy. It will take the flake much better, as its thicker All your concerns about chemical resistant, and abrasion resistance are more in the top coat then the base coat. IF the floor is done properly you basecoat shouldnt need chemical resistance. IF you're getting chemicals down that far then your top coat, and flake are ruined.

Polyurethanes don't perform well in immersion service (water); so if you intend to coat outside your garage door you might reconsider.

Maybe you or they are referring to urethane concrete? Because that is a much tougher base that gets poured thicker, can tolerate high vapor transmission, including exterior conditions. My vote would be urethane concrete base over any epoxy....nothing is tougher.
