Urrea/Proto Ratchet kits

I had another thread somewhere talking about the urrea kits, well I ended up getting them for dirt cheap and here is a picture of them next to a proto kit to see the difference for those of you who care to see if they are different.

these are the gears they work fine in a proto ratchet as I tested it.

But you can see the proto has sharper edges on the gear, but doesn't make a difference that I can tell. Maybe makes the proto weaker? Less meat on the end? I welcome any ideas on that...

Also Prices I paid due to a price mistake was 6.60 for the 5449rk kit, 13.29 for the 5649rk kit , 4.39 for the 5249 kits, not saying the best prices for each kit but not bad, and I did get 9 5849 kits also.

Well like I said it was a pricing error, so the prices have changed, but they are a little cheaper than the proto... Also you can call proto and argue with them and they could send you some kits for free, but this info might help. I also don't have all the prices from msc are they aren't on the web site, but those are some I bought from them.

Thanks 48548 - I'm not going to try to obtain free kits from Proto as I have no broken ratchets. It wouldn't be right to file a warranty claim for a broken ratchet when I really don't have one. I simply want a "standby" kit for an on-site field repair if I need it and I'm willing to pay a fair price. Also, I want the kits to repair broken oldies that might come along my way in the future (they always do).

One of our local rental and industrial tool supply house sells Urrea tools and they have a pretty big display on hand to touch and play with. I work on their network and have been bugging them with all kinds of questions since I am a big Proto fan. I just ordered the #100 pocket screwdriver and a hard plastic amber handle bit driver. The quality is really good in their tools.

I don't have a need at the moment for a ratchet replacement kit but the comparison pics are really appreciated.

I think the prices from the place I got them from are cheaper the what uurea shows... I am also trying to see if the local grainger and or MSC rep can make me a deal. Also notice the the lever is black and not chrome in case that is an issue with anyone...

Hope nobody minds a little thread necromancy on my part, but I wanted to share some information that I thought might be useful.

I've got one of the 1/2" (5449) versions that I snagged off flea-Bay many moons ago. It was/is like new and seems so beefy that I doubt it'll ever break, but since I really like this ratchet I thought it would be nice to have the kit on hand.

I thought about going the Urrea route, but somehow I like the original Proto parts better after looking at the photos in this thread. I actually found the correct kit on Amazon, although it does show a generic and incorrect photo and doesn't directly list this application.

I got the parts today and verified that it was indeed the right kit, cover plate is even stamped 5449.

Long story short, if anyone's looking for the original 1/2" Proto kit at a price slightly better than the Urrea model, you can find it by doing an Amazon search for "577-5449RK". The seller was "ReStockIt" and they seemed to pretty decent. Got a quick response to my emails and tracking # in short order. No hassles at all.

Wouldn't surprise me. I've ordered some other kits through Amazon that appeared to be drop shipped from Grainger. This one in particular was not dropped ship from Grainger, FWIW.

Excellent picts. I always wondered if rounder teeth would provide a "smoother" ratcheting action. By any chance did you try the proto pawls with the urrea gear, or vice versa?
Did either kit come with lube?

got my 1" kits for the 3/4" ratchet. fit is perfect and while I don't have a hydraulic torque tester (and wouldn't want to test to failure anyways...) I did snap it onto the backhoe and hopped on the end of the ratchet handle.

Held up just fine and has a nice ratcheting feel - for a 15 pound handle!

Mike made the transaction pleasant and gets the big seal of approval....

Seeing how URREA stuff is Proto/ProtoMex designs; it would be interesting to know what the agreement was between Proto/ProtoMex/URREA was when they parted ways. I would assume it was a licensing deal or possibly a one time payment for the agreement; a license agreement would make more money for Proto in long term fees. Anyone know? I guess we can speculate!

So, correct me if I am wrong but from a price point of view; there is no benefit, getting the kits from URREA, right?

They were cheaper so from a price point it would be worth using them over the proto. Also the proto kit for 5849 wont fit in a 5649 ratchet. This was good for people who want to make their 3/4 5649 ratchet into a 1" with out using an adapter.
