US General 27" box

Anyone know anything about this? In their ads, but cannot find it online. Wondering if you can get just the bottom box, I'd have no need (or space) for the top box. Alternatively, anyone know of a similar box out there? I don't like the 4 drawer boxes, just seems like you'd end up with a lot of wasted space. I think a 5 drawer (like the Husky at Home Depot or Craftsmen at Sears) would be fine, but can't find any of those locally either.

I mainly woodwork, but looking for a small box for my sockets, pliers, wrenches, drivers, etc.

That box has been around for a while. It's pretty nice and is inline with their wide boxes as far as quality goes. It's sold as a set and they don't sell the top or bottom separately. You could probably sell the top box on Craigslist or something. HF is updating their tool cabinets currently. They may have discontinued the old one and plan on bringing an updated one out soon.

Well sadly I just checked the website and they aren't showing that box anymore, which likely means it's discontinued. They've discontinued almost all their boxes to roll out updated versions in the last few weeks but I'm not seeing an updated version. It could be on the way though. Your best bet would be to check your local store and see if they still have any in stock, if so, it'll likely be discounted. Also on a side note I believe the tool box you're referencing is actually called the 26" chest. The 27" is the cheap crappy black one with only 8 drawers.

Layout on those is nice.
I looked at those, but every one at my local store looked like someone used the open drawers as a ladder. Generally, everything gets trashed there.

The 26" box is a nice setup. I've had mine (overloaded) for 5yrs.
If you plan on rolling it around much, you may need to support the bottom better and think about stronger casters, but otherwise I really like it.

The current boxes may be disappearing. HF is retooling their storage line. The current boxes are 18" deep, the new line if they are consistent, should be 22" if you can wait. The Waterloo Class Action Lawsuit has a lot of toolbox importers scrambling to avoid the new tariffs.

The current design isn't built to be expanded (but I did it anyway). If HF is smart any new design should be made to be compatible with the new 44" system. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Nice. Your setup looks great, but a bit too much for me. I actually think the 18" depth would be better for me, rather than a 22" depth. I am looking for a box that will fit in the space under my window AC unit, to hold all my "mechanics" tools (in quotes, because I refuse to work on cars ), but still need to have - Wrenches, sockets (shallow and deep), pry bars, screwdrivers, nut drivers, tap and dies, and also things like my staple gun/staples and packages of pneumatic nails.

I am going to call HF today and see if they have one, and if so, I will probably have a new box tomorrow! If not, I will wait. I have been going back and forth on this stupid box for what seems like years!

Certainly nice, just more than i'd like to spend. Initially, was trying to keep this purchase under $200 (have $50 in Sears gift cards), but just think this HF box is nicer than what I can find elsewhere, surprisingly.

I don't think you would go wrong with one of these boxes. Something else to consider is that they come with drawer liners which are just foam sheets, but they work. It cost me $30-40 to put drawer liners in my Craftsman boxes. The 26" HF boxes are better than the current Craftsman offerings. I know because I have 9 of the Craftsman 26" tool boxes. In the space you have under you window and between your workbench and band saw, it might also be worth considering one of the 44" HF boxes (actually 42" without the handle) especially if you can find one of the 18" deep ones. It looks like it would fit right in there. You can put a plywood or MDF spacer on the top and then put whatever wood or steel top you want on top of that and have an extra workbench as well as a tool box. Here is how I set mine up. Whatever you choose, I think you will be happy with it but if not, HF will take it back. Remember to post some pics of your decision.

between the 26" the 44" and the side drawer hangon you can make many a different layout .

I saw the new 26" box yesterday. It's not built as strong as the 44 or other large boxes. Very minimal reinforcement on the bottom, smaller slides, and the drawers aren't as smooth. But, the drawer layout is good, and it's probably fine as a secondary box, or for light duty storage

I agree with Ambrose Wolfinger.

I have both 44 and 26 inch HF boxes (both tops and bottom boxes). The 44 inch box better built, sturdier, better slides, better everything. I do not have room for two 44 inch boxes so I went with one 44 and one 26. I keep heavy tool items (sockets, wrenches, ratchets, etc) in 44 inch box and pliers, screwdrivers, bits, mirrors, pickup tools, all other light weight items, in the 26 inch box. So far, no issues with either box, but I do not move them around either, they are stationary. I know in the past some people had problems with the wheels breaking down after a few years, so I do not move mine. I think I paid $247 for the 26 in boxes as a set, and bought the 44 top ($229) and bottom ($349) separately.

Both of mine are 18 inches deep, I had them for about 1 year.
newer 44 are 22 inches deep, I do not know if newer 26 inch boxes are 22 inches or still 18.
I have not seen the newer 26 inch boxes yet.

I called my local HF today, and they do not have any of the 26" boxes in stock. They have yet to receive the new 26" display model, but did say it should be in stock by mid-may. The $299 price is good through the end of May, so I will call back in a couple weeks.

I bought the HF 26" box to store hardware same as you plan. Nice thing the 4th drawer down fits a 'full' drill index box (my set is the HF Cobalt set, but a Huot index fits too) which most drawers are either too tall or too short.

Because the big drawers have only one slide they aren't as good as bulk hardware. They manage but it's not ideal.

I wound up using it as a tool chest in the basement shop with the basics while I kept the big tool chest in the garage. I moved the hardware to a combination of lateral file cabinet for screws and nails, and a flat file cabinet ('document' cabinet I have seen them called) with no drawer slides for bolts nuts machine screws etc.

Well, picked up a series 2 26"x22" box today. Took the kids down towards our local HF today to go to a trampoline park, figured i'd stop in and see what they had. Picked up the new box and one of the tool cart flip-up tables. Used one of the handle holes and had to drill an additional hole. Only mounted it with two bolts, instead of four- Seems good enough. The table isn't "centered" on the side of the box (made for the 18" tool cart) but I don't really mind.

Got the box for $229+ tax. It will probably go on sale for less, but I needed it and am happy with that price - Especially considering what I was going to buy as an alternative (craftsman).

Really nice box, IMO, though I don't have much to compare to. Overall, very happy with it! Now the fun part of organizing tools!

Not a bad box at the price . full price is 279.99 so you got it at 50bucks off and if it gets a better super coupon it not going be much better (maybe 209.99 at best !)
I like the drawer heights and 22" depth massive help on efficient layout .
Would like see them do a 36" box with same drawer layout .
Don't hold much chance on that as HF really didn't make most of the series 2 change and really not good at thinking out the box (pun intended) ...

As another poster said upgrade casters and add support to the bottom. Its a bit $$$ though. Pretty sure i paid alot less for mine... i remember being about 499cad. Maybe 599cad.
