US General 44" tool box part numbers

Hi all, if there's already a thread about this, I apologise. I spent about 30 minutes searching and didn't find what I am after.

I am getting ready to buy a tool box to mount in the back of a service truck and I'm pretty much settled on the 44" us general tool box (in blue, if it matters. Lol).

I'm curious why there's 3 part numbers for these boxes. The descriptions are all the same, so it doesn't make sense to me why they'd have different numbers. I saw something on another forum about the different numbers on tools being from different manufacturers, but I'm not sure if that applies to the tool boxes as well. If there's a difference, I'd prefer to get the best quality one available.

Has anyone had issues with these boxes? If so, how did harbor freight handle it?

Has anyone had one mounted in a truck? Does anyone have any tips for securing a tool box in a truck?

Thanks for any help, and if there's already a thread on this, sorry for being a FNG. Lol

Thanks! I knew it would happen if I started a new thread. Lol

Looks like I'm not the only one with this question.

Hopefully we can get the 44" box part numbers figured out before I have to buy one.

Do the boxes come in a big box, or are they open and able to be played with before you load them up?

Review info on 56" differences as some be same as 44" and by looking at user manuals you may conclude same factories of better ones .

You can pull cardboard before loading it or even after if they make a fuss, always wise check everything from HF in car park and as much as possible in store to be sure it functions and meets your QC standards :)

I was just at one of my HF stores and they had all three colors of the 44” on display. I couldn’t see the item numbers on the backs, but all three had differences. Two of them had the thinner front drawer top ledges, but one with fully extending drawers and the other not fully extending drawers. The third box had the thicker/deeper top ledge on the drawer front like my (#64457) 56” box has, but the drawers didn’t fully extend. Personally, I’d purchase the box with the thicker drawer ledge simple because it probably comes from the same factory that built my 56” box, and it seemed more solid, but who really knows yet? Best bet for someone interested in purchasing is to just go examine them in person and use your own judgement.

I got a 44" box today. I ended up with the SKU that ends in 444. It has thin drawer lips. The display box had the bigger lips, but they wouldn't sell me the display one. They didn't even have keys to the display boxes and all of them were locked, except for one that they had all dolled up with the top and side cabinets.

I hope it doesn't fall apart too quickly. Tomorrow's project is getting it mounted in my service truck.

Just give 71goldss the sku number and ask him what he thinks before buying it. He be the expert. :)

Haha! I’m far from an expert, especially on the new 44’s. I just have many HF stores in my area and have been getting more and more involved in all these box differences since going through my experience when buying two 56’s and expecting them to match.

I don’t know the numbers on the 44’s, and because of the way they are displayed in the stores, it’s near impossible to read the numbers on the back of the boxes. I’ve tried to be a little inconspicuous and pull one end of the box out enough to see the number, but they are in there too tight. I know the numbers are on the square label on the top center rear of the box, so I thought I might just hold my phone back there and see what it captures the next time I’m at one of my stores.

I think the more and more this subject on the box differences is coming to light here on GJ, more members will start posting numbers with details of the boxes that they’ve purchased.

Does your 444 have the fully extending drawers?

Why do they call the box a 44"? It is actually only 42". The added 2" is the handle on the end! I did not use my handle, so I have a 42"! Just saying, no big deal.

After an exchange because of a damaged drawer, I got the -444 un crated.

It has thin drawer lips and the drawers don't pull all the way out.

I was curious at the store and pulled the display box out to look at the label, as it had the deeper drawer lips and the number on that one is -446. The drawers didn't pull all the way out on that one either.

I'm still working on getting it mounted in my truck, so I don't have too many more updates. I was surprised to see that it had so many spare keys though.

For my purposes, I was also glad to see that there is a second, lower set of threaded holes. I'm planning on building triangle or square shaped brackets to bolt in the threaded holes to hold the box in place in the back of the truck.

I purchased a 44" black 64441 today. It does NOT have full extension drawers. They are 1-1/4" from full extension.

I went to my local HF today and looked at the 44" boxes.

The bottom black 64442 and bottom blue 64445 had full extension drawers.
The bottom red 64134 did NOT have full extension drawers.

The top red 64158 did have full extension drawers.

Purchased two 44" Red #64281 before Christmas. The drawers do not "fully extend". The color and construction match.
