US General 44" Toolbox Hidden Feature

During the past year I have slowly replaced most of my 2x4 shop furniture with rolling toolboxes. The first of the lot was a US General 44" from Harbor Freight. It is working well as the base for my fixit bench where the drawers are helping me get organized. I made some magnetic labels for the drawers so I could remember where I put stuff.

So today I was working at the bench on a project and stuck my hand back in the top drawer looking for some scotchbrite pads. But I found something unusual and drug it into the daylight.

GASP! It was a bundle of drawer labels with plastic protectors. WTF??? I never knew it was there. It was a little hectic when I set up the bench and I guess I just overlooked these things.

I really like these labels and will use them. I can move the magnetic ones over to the other benches. NONE of them have the neat handles with integrated label slots. GREAT JOB, HF!

I have a 72 inch box that has the same type labels, I asked the store mgr. about purchasing more, He went into the back and came out and gave me another set free of charge, not sure where he got them. I would guess that they sold a floor model and didn't give the person the extra pcs. and then discovered them later.

I didn't realize what the little plastic things were that came with the labels until I went back to HF and saw just exactly what they were for. Felt kinda foolish after that.

It is only a surprise if they were pushed to the back of the drawer. Mine were in plain sight so I always knew I had 'em. I was hoping to discover a real secret feature. Oh well.

I got them on both of my 44" boxes and tried them out on the first one. They were constantly sliding out place as the black locks that also came with the box would fall off. I ended up just pulling them off and setting them aside. nice idea but they need better way of securing the black plastic locks that do fit but tend to come off to easy. I just memorizing where I put my tools.

I'm not big fan of the large labels. I had to re-org the toolboxes and to find everything I added some red electrical tape to the corners of the drawer pull tops and used a sharpie to abbreviate; 3/8, 1/4, SD, PLRs, P&C, H, .... Working out pretty good for me so far.

I am glad to see a tool chest used to store stuff other than tools.

Do you have the little plastic caps that go on the sides of the slot to keep the labels in? If not they'll probably drive you nuts sliding out the sides as you use the box. That's what was happening with mine. Just regular opening and closing the drawers would slowly slide them out the sides. I finally just removed the labels and the rails completely and went minimalist:

There has been in the market for thirty years that I know of these wonderful glue sticks that are loaded with post-it note type repositionable, no residual, temporary glue.

It would solve what seems to be a common problem....

edit;
I checked my box. It has long dry erase type white strips

Well, WooHoo to GJ!. I left off the handle because I put this box inside a frame. I opened the handle box and it was full of those plastic niblets that hold the labels in place. Thanks for the head's up.

I like the look of it without the rails I'm going to do that to mine.
