So I finally decided to go pic up one of these beast and thought I would add the side cabinet to it just for giggles.

I stopped by the closest Harbor Freight store to me (about 70 miles one way) yesterday while out visiting customers. They had one sitting in the front of the store to fondle and play with, and I did. It was what I was expecting and made the decision to come back today with the truck and pick one up.

I asked if they had more in stock and the nice guy behind the counter checked and assured me that they had several.

Load up the truck this morning and head down. Geeze I didn't know they were having their black friday weekend sale and it was a madhouse. I picked up 10 or 12 other items, stood in line for about 30 minutes and finally got to the cashier. Gave her my stack of coupons and told her I needed the boxes and cabinet also. She radio'd back to get someone to pull them from the warehouse for me, rang me up and about $1500 later I drove around back to get loaded.

The kids in the back loaded the boxes in the truck for me after checking my receipt and even offered to tie it down for me, so I let them. Something didn't look right when they were finished. I've got a short bed Silverado and only had half a bed full of tool boxes. Yeah, they loaded the 44" box instead. Honest mistake right? I checked my receipt that the girl loading the truck checked off on to make sure I actually bought the 56" and I did.

When I pointed out that the wrong box was loaded, she said they didn't have anything bigger than what she loaded. Got the store manager back there and sure enough, he said they did not stock the 56". I offered to buy the display and he flat refused. At this point, the two that originally loaded the truck still had the receipt. I told the manager to just unload everything and give me a full refund since they had supposedly checked yesterday and assured me that they had the boxes in stock.

I asked the store manager if they could just order me the correct box and have it shipped to my shop for free, trying to save them the sale. He was pretty fast to say no.

He was pleasant and unloaded the boxes from my truck and then asked for the receipt so they could go up front to do the refund. Oddly, nobody could find it.

Long story short, the girl that checked the receipt and loaded the wrong box anyways turned out to be a manager also.

About an hour later, I finally left empty handed with a very bad taste in my mouth for that store.

I did call another that was 50 miles away and they verified that they did in deed have multiple boxes in stock and are holding one for me until tomorrow morning.

I'm starting to think this was an omen that I really was not meant to have this box for some reason.

I might just go buy a new laptop tomorrow instead.

I have had the 56" for the 3 years and I love it but the other stuff you dealt with is ******* ********. Get the box from the other store and I am sure you will enjoy it. I had to drive 80 miles to get mine and it was totally worth it.

so the store failed, not the box right?

Correct, absolute store failure on multiple levels. That was my first and last visit with that store.

Will be driving to the other store tomorrow. They'd better really have it in stock when I get there or things might get a little redneck. :shocking:

Some HF tool stores are messed up. The people they higher, I really wonder where they were picked up the side of the road. Most people who work their could give two sh*ts. Some are just very sloppy, not dressed nicely. The other day I stopped into harbor Freight and came to the check out and told the Cashier I left my 25% off in my car. I told her Id be back in a sec. There was nobody behind me and she goes Sureeee. Like no emotion. Certain people are really kind other not so much. Most of them don't have the knowledge to work there.

there was a 56 box in my local store marked down to 259! missing a caster and no keys. drawers were locked. no big deal. i could drill the lock and get a matching set of casters. went to pull the ticket off of it to take it to the register and this guy ripped it out from my hand and run to the counter with it. im sitting there looking at a gaggle of people in line, surely someone wasnt going to check this guy out. oh well. it wasnt meant for me to have it. ended up getting a deal on a open box 44 a few weeks later for only 259 and i have been very pleased with it.

If you don't mind me asking, which one did you go to? :dunno:

I thought this thread was going to be how you found a mogwai in the box and accidentally fed him after midnight.:willy_nil

Yeah, I'm not sure what to say about this one. More a reflection on the employees than the stuff they sell.

Yeah it was an employee issue and more so a management issue.

Went down to Douglasville Ga this morning and this is what I left with

Uncrated on the trailer when I got home and thought, **** how am I going to do this...

Removed drawers, jacked it up, knocked out the blocks under it, sat it down and rolled it off the trailer. Reassembled and installed the end cabinet. Still not sure which end I want it on yet.

I think I will be happy with it.

That toolbox looks so nice, I think it’s probably worth all the hassle. Wow!

I find I really to need to have my stuff together when dealing with HF. It’s a deep discount operation and the store staff generally reflects this. As long as I have a good idea on what I’m looking for and some back up plans I have had great experiences. This includes having research complete prior to hitting the store!

When I start to drift around and ask for help, it can lead to confusion and disappointment. One manager was super helpful one time, but for the most part there is an overwhelming sense of apathy and indifference.

My preferred strategy is to have my coupons ready (either paper or electronic) and be ready to deal with out of stock items by picking up less desired stuff. There is always some sort inexpensive gadget there worth trying!

I had an excellent experience buying and returning a 26” box I changed my mind on (wanted a bigger, different brand).

Anyway, congratulations on the new box, that thing looks great!

Harbor Freight is about two blocks from my house. Every time I've been there the staff has been knowledgeable and most helpful. So I wouldn't think the issues some of you are describing - are a "Harbor Freight" problem. Sounds more like a specific store, or perhaps Regional Management issue. If the Manager is doing a bad job of hiring and training - if he doesn't know how to motivate employees or actually "LEAD"… then that is a Personnel Issue at the Store.

When you get service that ***** - ALWAYS - list the Store Location/Address.

Regardless of which end you put the side cab on, wouldn't you want the casters (as opposed to the fixed wheels) on that same end?

This was my third time ever visiting a HF store. I've worked retail before and understand the problems stores face. The store I visited today was very clean, organized and everyone I spoke with was pleasant and tried to be helpful.

I knew going in what to expect of the quality of some of their items as I have work around their products for many years, just never had the urge to shop there.

They do offer some great products for good prices and of course, they have some serious **** that I could not imagine ever wasting money on. I did pick up a few other things today while I was waiting on them to pull my boxes for me. It's hard to beat gloves that fit and rags that you are going to throw away when they are the right price and we use them each week.

I can see visiting the first store again after a few months to see if employee's have changed or if it's still the same folks. The store I visited today I would not hesitate to stop in anytime, but there is always a gamble on who will be working there anytime you stop. Same goes for any store really.

Anybody have one of their air hose reels? I was tempted but don't want something that's going to be a problem child when I can easily buy one somewhere else.

Well, I thought about that. I have a creeper hanger and handle on the swivel end of one of my other large boxes and really like it there because I use the other end to hang long prybars and extensions.

Since the end cab is not as deep as the roll cab, the handle will not bolt to it easily and the handle (or creeper hanger in my case) would need to be on the swivel caster end. I'm going to have to play with it some. It will probably be end of the year before I actually transfer any tools over to it anyways unless I just start using it for random storage.

I'm going to have to work on the casters a little too. It really does not roll very easily.

HF seems like a pretty ****** establishment.. Both of the close stores to me arent great. There computer database also seems extremely slow. It took me 40 minutes to return a couple things last week! ridiculous..

I've got a couple of them and have been happy - no problems with either of them! Get 'em when they're on sale and they're hard to beat (and yes, that's a tough thing to utter about a Harbor Freight product!) Hope you like the 56" box as much as I like mine!
