This is a long overdue project. Ever since I bought my 72” US General hutch, I’ve been banging my head on the lid when it’s open. They had it designed, so the lid stuck out 4 1/4” past the edge of the hutch. You reach in to get something and smoke your head.
Originally, I put 4 inch risers underneath the wheels of the toolbox, but I didn’t like that. There is plenty of room in the back of the hutch to accommodate the lid. Time to fire up the 3-D printer. I can’t take credit for this design as somebody else designed it. It’s been modified two or three times already and then I modified it some more.
It’s a two part sliding hinge system. The plastic used was nylon with carbon fiber in it. All the original hardware gets reused. I had to add a 8x1.25 nutsert for the gas strut stud, but it broke pretty quickly. I work for a plastic injection molding company and we have heat stakers there. They’re used for threaded inserts melted into plastic. I tried a pair of those and they were stronger.
The hutch lid now is actually recessed into the upper corner of the back of the hutch. This makes the handle on the front of the lid recess into the hutch opening. No more head banging. Unless I’m listening to Metallica in the garage.
