My dad owns one and my friends dads own them so when i go over there i test them out too. I'm not talking about the Professional Craftsman line with the $5000 tool boxes, no one buys those, they'll take that money and buy a truck brand. But i'm talking the same exact C-man box with ball bearings. It doesn't even compare with the US General

Well my dad has the same Craftsman box he had when I was born and it still opens like new. I'm sure that's largely due to the fact that he takes care of his tools, and the HF box would probably last that long too if it was well taken care of. I've been in HF here plenty and I haven't seen a box that I would spend money on yet. They feel like everything else in there to me.

I say get the box if you want it. I wouldn't let a bunch of people on a forum decide what tools I like. I wouldn't have mostly Craftsman if I did that's for sure, haha. People seem to dislike Craftsman around here...

Well said, threads like this are the reason I went from an active senior member to a part-time lurker. I have a sweet spot for true USA products (if they are good, i.e. Cornwell USA tools) ...........these days I have been disappointed with the value of alot of USA products, are real impressed with GearWrench like products...............

Things have become soo tight financially, I don't buy much these days, and when I do I will buy the best product for the money that will do the job well, heck it only has to last my lifetime, and I'm broke after paying my required bills.......................

It is time for Americans to stop wanting everything, and getting up and start doing everything they need to, that is how the country was built in the old days........

My neighbor is a USA "nut" he was poking fun at my other neighbor for buying a Subaru................made in Indiana! with global components..................like the other guy's Chevy is more USA..........it is all old.

Back to my lurking

Thats exactly right, Today people are having to make tough decisions on the goods and services they purchase. I dont know whats wrong with working your way to the top, Whether your talking about Toolboxes or People thinking they need to start life with a 300K house at the age of 20 and not being able to afford to furnish it. However you look at it, its bad money management. There is no since in buying a 2K dollar toolbox if you cant afford to buy any tools. Im not saying the 2k dollar box isnt better but sometimes you have to deal to get where you want to be. Some of the rationalization in this thread alone would have a person live on the street if they couldnt afford to buy a house instead of renting for a couple years. I honestly think its a shame that you feel like you cant be around full time,as Im getting discouraged myself. Why the admins cant step in and put a stop to this back and forth non-sence i dont have a clue. It seems the answer is to lock the thread, That fixes nothing. It only discourages people from getting valuable opinions on the pertinent questions in there life.

Well this is becoming epic and I've only been a member here for a few weeks lol! Truth be told, I LOVE quality stuff and tend to buy a few nice things rather than a bunch of ****. I will have a nice box someday, but I'd rather have the nicer tools first and the box whenever. I actually understand why quality items cost so much money. It's friggin' expensive to make something just a little bit better than something that is "almost" as good. You do get what you pay for in the end, and tools are no different. Even though $400 is squat for a tool box, I still would rather spend the money on a few sets of wrenches or sockets if I thought the box was a complete POS. However if the box was not too bad, and would do ok for a few years for me, it would allow me to spend that extra $2-3k on tools up front. Make sense? I'm totally all about buying US made stuff, but if everyone thinks they don't spend money overseas, then they are sadly mistaken. Thanks for all the constructive feedback, and to everyone else, thanks for the entertainment.

I had a Waterloo (= Craftsman professional) double stacker, but wasn't really impressed by it. Although the slides ran really well, they didn't do much better then at the HF box. The worst thing though was the paint, which was really horribly poor quality. The lightest bump let the paint get dented and split from the metal surface. They painted on the naked sheet metal. No primer nothing. No wonder I didn't stick well. And I think this was just simple 2k paint instead of the powder coating of the HF. Ended up selling the Cman for about ~800% and got me the HF for ~350$ and am happy with it. Can give the HF box a 'Best Buy' award of new (or like new used) boxes within the 300 -1000$ range.

Waterloo powder coats their boxes these days.

Makes sense to me. When I first started wrenching on my vehicles it was out of necessity and I'm glad Harbor Freight was around because I was able to buy all the tools needed to do a head gasket job and still pay the car payment, rent, buy baby formula etc. Since then I have discovered I like working on cars and have bought better tools. Many of the HF tools I started with though are still going strong.

Just ignore the zealots around here when they get on their soap boxes. Also read through the HF Pass Fail thread.

This thread has been cleaned up. Fellas, if you can't express your opinion without bashing someone else, you need to find another forum.

to throw out my 2¢ on the HF box...

I bought the original 3 piece combo (before the lockers were available)

used it in shop environment for 3 years, moved it several times fully loaded with tools including a 1600 mile trip. It has now been retired to home use only because the lay out was no longer working for me at the shop. Only actual failure i had was the lock in the top box. ($20 fix) other complaints, finish ***** to keep clean (castrol super clean works well, just has to be done on a constant basis) drawers can't be swapped between top, bottom, and side cabinets w/o doing some fab work. would i buy again? hell yeah. i was thinking of selling off my kennedy POS at home and picking up another HF bottom.

I have a Kobalt box that I like and I have no idea where it's made, probably Taiwan. It's plenty good enough for me and I think it is a better box then the HF box. I bought the top new (about 7 years ago) for $450.00 and found a matching bottom box on CL last year for $400.00. It's a 40 1/2" box with roller slides and a good quality smooth finish. It's the black boxes that Lowe's used to carry. NAPA has them now with a different brand name and I still find the quality of the box to be a step up from HF and on par or a bit better in quality then Craftsman's professional line.

I do think for the price the HF boxes look like a deal. I also cannot afford to purchase most American made boxes (or tools) but it is easy to see the superior quality. It's just way to pricey for my needs.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I'm still on the fence about it, but this gives me some things to think over. My wife is the one believe it or not, that is pushing me to hold off to get a nicer box later on, and she is one of the most frugal people on the planet. I guess I'll just keep searching CL in the mean time and hope I run across one of those almost free deals to get me by.

You can always get the Storehouse 3 piece toolbox for $150 from HF (usually in the form of a coupon in the back of a magazine or online somewhere). It is not quite as smooth or sturdy as the US general but it has a decent amount of storage and will tide you over until you find that CL white whale. Also it comes with drawer liners.

http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/rolling-cabinets/11-drawer-roller-cabinet-67421.html

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this. IMO, that thing is an absolute POS and won't have any resale value when you want to get something else. That box doesn't even remotely compare with the US General box.

This is another of those threads that define a person's wants vs. needs. Everyone would like to have a top of the line Snap-on, Matco, Mac, Lista, etc. cabinet or box to put their tools in. That is defined as a want...

The reality for many is that the HF boxes are a very good value for the money and satisfy the second part of the above statement. They are often what a person needs.

Is a used top of the line box an alternative? Yes they are but only if one is available at a decent price. If they are not for sale or priced too high for what they are, a lower cost, NEW box is an attractive alternate. Buying American is nice but not a viable option for everyone on this board and they should not be ridiculed for making a sound FINANCIAL choice.

It might not be your choice but it might be the right choice for THAT person. I happen to have a top and bottom 41" HF box with a side box and a fairly nice SO 1023 roller with a side locker, riser and top storage. Each one has its place and the HF box was my primary until I lucked up on the SO. To be honest about it, the SO is MUCH nicer but then again, I still think someone who buys that box off of the truck has entirely too much disposable income on their hands. I would rather put the extra money into paying off my house.

Does that make someone who pays $20,000+ for a Snap-on box nuts? No, their needs are not mine and their financial situation is different also. In this case, the HF box will do exactly what the OP wanted, it will hold his tools, roll around and lock up. It is a better box for the money than anything else I have seen in that price range and should last the average homeowner decades before something goes wrong.

My take on all of this? To the OP, go for it. The HF box is a LOT of box for the money. It might not be made in America but neither are a lot of other items in most of our houses including the computers we are working on.

Maybe, maybe not. My father has had one in his garage for a while now and it has not burned down the house or sold his tools for crack. It does in fact do the inane job of storing his medium sized collection of garage sale purchased craftsman tools in a semi organized fashion quite averagely.

Also I don't really consider resale value when I purchase things for $150 from HF. They tend to be given away or tossed if they lose their usefulness.

Now that my slides are getting broken in , The drawers are smooth as silk and the catches seen to have eased up a bit so far 2 months into mine I love it. I find it funny that most of the people that want you to buy a overprice top of the line box and make payments for the next 20 years just cause its made in U.S.A. are the first ones that defend themselves about buying a import car..LMAO seriously, Does a tool box make the work go any faster? No buy a decent box for the decent money and use the money you saved to buy the good tools that make a difference while doing the job. A mac or snap on box new or used isn't gonna make working on something any easier, All it does is hold tools.

i lost my old ( 20+ year old ) craftsman box in a fire. i replaced it with a new craftsman 3 tier box, quiet glide, basicly the same as my old one. it was the biggest piece of garbage. thin metal, slides sucked, just basicly ****. went back to look at the professional boxes they had and they were built the same. i bought the hf box a few months back to replace the craftsman. worlds better than anything in sears right now, at least at my local stores. does it compare to my buddys matco? no. but it is a good sturdy well built box. pick it up,for the money you can't beat it. you won't be disapointed with it.

So basically, if you had a post in this thread that was part of the whole COO "debate," it's gone. I might have left one or two longer posts that contained elements of that kind because they also contained useful info.

Any posts that do not specifically address the OP's question without debating global economics will disappear.

I don't often go to HF often at all, but I was there this week to get my ultrasonic cleaner. They had one of these much-talked-about box setups on display, which they never used to have. I was excited to check it out, but a bit disappointed. I guess maybe based on posts from here, I thought I would really "feel" the quality. Everything looked and felt fine, but it wasn't anything "awesome." The drawers felt a bit thin and wobbly.

I'm not saying it isn't a good deal, because with a sale and then the 20% off coupon you get a lot of box for very little money. I'm just saying it was less than I had hoped.

speaking only from $ point of view, you can buy the box for $270 ($339 -20% coupon) when it goes back on sale. Use it until you can find a deal on a name brand box, and then if you still care anymore about HF vs SO, etc,, you can sell the box for $200. They sell in less than a day on Craigslist at this price the few times I have seen them listed. You are only risking about $70 to try it out...Of course you could buy a SO box for $5000 and sell it used for, lets say $2000, if you are lucky. Well, that doesn't sound as good to me...

I'm not sure, but I think not. The fit and finish on the Masterforce boxes are head and shoulders above what I have seen for other boxes in the under $450 range.

I'll be driving out that way in the next couple months. If you want one I'll bring it out with me.

You're a nice guy, Mitch. :)

But I'd like to lay hands on one before any kind of commitment. It would have to be pretty nice for me to look past the frog coloring.:lol_hitti

You may want to take a look at the new boxes that NAPA Auto Parts stores are carrying. They are in the $450.00 range. I have two of them (a top and bottom box) and they are built quite a bit better then the HF and Craftsman boxes. Good slides, heavier sheet metal and a nice black finish.

No, nice would be if you lived in Texas. It seems every time I drive out there, I have my truck about half full in the back. IIRC you live like ten miles off my path.

The frog color takes some adjustment.

I'm going to have to take a look at those NAPA boxes. A buddy of mine works there, so maybe a good deal could be had.

I will admit that I have a non-roller bearing Craftsman setup that I have had for about 15 years. I recently bought some ball bearing roll arounds. I assumed that they were better quality but the years have made a difference. Unfortunately, in terms of drawer action, my upgrade with the recent purchase feels too much like my 15 year old set to think I moved up. And the metal does seem thinner. Of course, that seems to be the trend for pretty much everything these days. Anyway - I didn't buy them until I got a great price and I don't regret the purchase.

My understanding is Menards is a central us Region thing. I have one about an hour north of me, and one about an hour and a half south of me. I recently made two trips to the south one (week apart) and almost made a third. (Performax cart that seems to compare with a Matco imported cart).

I looked a little at their boxes, well built but too small, JMHO. However, Tractor supply (one local), has boxes that are named Masterhand if I remember correctly.

I keep thinking if/when I go larger, it will either be built by me, a strictlytoolboxes purchase (when did they stop being a sponser, not on the front page?), or one heck of a deal (almost never seen locally). Otherwise, I live with my multiple 26" toolboxes. (most deals, one bought years back, new)

What size are these $450 NAPA boxes?

40 1/2" wide. 18" deep 18" tall.

The bottom box is 35" tall not counting the wheels.

The top box is almost 7 years old and the bottom box I purchased slightly used from CL last year. I noticed that NAPA now carries the same box under a different brand name.

Is it just distortion from the camera lens or is that top box sagging in the middle?

I'm gonna say Camera. Thew H/F box was even better once I got the weight on some tools in the drawers, I would never own any box without ball bearing slides, That quite glide stuff is ****.
