US-made sledge?

Anyone other than Vaughan selling a 6lb or 8lb sledge hammer made in the USA, preferably with a fiberglass or synthetic handle?

Past that, any decent Asian-made 6lb or 8lb sledge to keep an eye out for?

Lowe's has Kobalt (not USA), Home Depot has Husky (not USA). Both Ace and True Value sell Collins Axe, but I refuse to purchase that brand after seeing how they advertise them in-store.

I'm most certainly not anti-import, and I'm most certainly not "all my stuff must be made in the USA!", but, I'm in the market for a sledge, and figured I'd aim towards buying a domestically-produced one.

Went out today to both the local Ace and True Value, and found their Collins Axe displays.

Every hammer/axe/maul has a nice sticker with a big ol' US flag on it - touting, in the fine print, that the HANDLE is "American Hickory!" and then, nearby, in smaller letters, that the hammer/axe/maul head itself is made in Mexico.

Apparently Truper bought Collins Axe a few years ago.

If they didn't have that shyster sticker on them, I probably would have bought one of them today and called it good, but that sticker rubbed me the wrong way.

Looking online, I see Vaughan has the SS6 and SS8 6lb/8lb on a hickory handle. They're not Harbor Freight's 8lb fiberglass handle $19.99 cheap, but I wouldn't have a problem ordering one of them online - I'd just prefer a not-wood handle.

The Carlyle one at my local NAPA (HSH630 - 6lb sledge) is list $119. I can get it for $100, but I opted not to purchase at this time.

Even though I don't really want a wooden-handled sledge, I'd rather pay $59.22 (Amazon) for a Vaughan SS6 than $100 for a Carlyle HSH630.

I don't see that Estwing makes anything like I'm looking for, sadly.

Any thoughts?

It's hard to beat the sledge hammers with the unbreakable technology, steel core, rubber handle. They are sold under the Wilton Bash name and some other companies name, made in Mexico. We use one to mostly shear off limestone rocks sticking up in the hay fields, still going after 5 years. Generally a wood handle sledge lasts about 1-2 years doing rocks.

I bought an 8 pound Barco sledge with fiberglass handle from Harry Epstein just over a year ago for $26. It is supposed to be Made in the USA.

The last sledge hammer I bought was a 14 lb. Napa Ultrapro with the indestructible handle. Ultrapro is Napa's Canadian house brand but it is very similar to the OTC sledge hammers and the Carlyle

Even though we have good sledges up here (Garant) I like it better than the wood handles for overstrikes and should be stronger than the fiberglass.

I know Williams has a fiberglass sledge that is made in the USA

Trusty cook is a dead blow, sounds like the op wants a straight up metal head sledge.

Again, not opposed, but, those are getting towards the pricier end of the spectrum.

I'll keep those in mind, thanks!

Maybe Council Tool has something that would work?

I think we've found a winner!

A Council Tool PR600FG (6lb, fiberglass handle) is $34.94 MSRP, available for $27.95 + $12.99 shipping (total $40.94) via eBay.

Thank you!

Is Ames any good anymore? Home Depot used to carry them, but I don't see them around anywhere.

I saw blue fiberglass handled sledges at an industrial supply, marked Jackson (think blue wheelbarrows). I think they were USA. They are connected to Ames somehow.

Another option is Warwood, made in W.V.
Forgot, Nupla makes them as well.

I'm thinking that if you bought the 1st one you saw, the job would be done and over with.

It's a sledge, no real need to over think things here.
