Hi,

Looking to buy a set of wire strippers (i have normal ones) for stripping the outer off of wire without actually cutting the inner wire for when taking feeds and wiring in aftermarket stuff to wiring looms.

First of all is this the correct tool:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Blue-Poin...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Secondly i can't find the part number for these but i suspect they are made in china/Taiwan.

Are made in USA models available ?

Blue point is a good tool regardless of the COO. It's also owned by snap on so I'm sure they make a similar model, just search their website. I've got a similar one I use I think Greenlee or klein makes it.

not sure about that style, but Ideal makes "the other style" of automatic wire strippers in the US. I wanted to say Klein but apparently theirs are made in Taiwan.

There are several makers of those tools, and the better version is made in Taiwan while the cheaper is Chinese. They all break their springs after a few thousand strips, so it's best to buy them locally for warranty ease. Don't bother with the Chinese version as it is terrible. Radio Shack's (Taiwan-made, same as Blue Point) model has lifetime warranty, but after a few warranty replacements they cut you off. Menards sells GB Tools (also Taiwan), and so far they have been pretty good with the warranty---I like those the best:

I don't think there is a USA-maker of this kind of auto-stripper. Ideal's version has blades and it pretty much an auto version of the usual bladed manual strippers. At work we use the auto strippers for most PVC insulated wire, and only need the blades for coax and Teflon wire.

Thanks for the info.

I try to not buy Taiwan/China tools but if not possible it will have to do.

I doubt i will use them more than once a week so if they last a few thousand uses that's OK with me.

Is the above tool though the correct one for stripping the outer of wires without actually cutting the wire core ?

I used to do 12v stuff (alarm and remote start) a lot and for me to maximize my installation efficiency, I use a simple cutting plier but sharp to CUT and STRIP wires.

I would try and learn to use a cutting plier to strip wires.

Ideal stripmaster, they work differently than most by having specific dies that cut all the way around the insulation. This gets discussed at least once a week.

*Sadly I think the new stripmasters are "Made of global materials" how ever you want to interpret that.

Yes, and it will even strip multiple wires of the same gauge at the same time. I routinely strip 3-4 wires to save time and strain on the springs (I just know they will break after a few thousand strip cycles).

Pressmaster of Sweden is an actual tool manufacturer and many of their models are relabeled and sold under other quality names. Check them out if quality and COO are priorities:

If you want to spend some real cash on manual strippers consider the Facom 162, made in France. I paid over $100 for them 10 years ago, so I'd imagine they are pretty pricey now. But they flawlessly CUT & STRIP any gauge (21-11) wire, with adjustment for strip length. They are heavy though, and feel likely you have a sewing machine in your hand, albeit a very good sewing machine...
