SO CDR4450 is 14.4V & is $400 list online. SO CDR4850A is 18V & is $430 list online. I understand that the batteries are probably imported from Chicom. I assume the drills themselves are made here since the website says country of origin USA for both.

Who makes these for SO or do they make them in-house?

Which of these two would you recommend & why?

I currently don't have a cordless drill, but it would be very handy around the house installing undercabinet lights, hanging hose reels, mounting garage shelving, etc.
Are there other models and/or manufacturers that I should be considering which claim to be made in USA?
Viking is made in USA but all their products require compressed air.

Thanks.

Product Brand Snap-on
this is from my computer ( snap on dss software)
I love the 18volt, but this new 14.4 is sweet. a little more compact and has some torque. so it is a toss up....

by Snap-On?

Considering that the Murphy plant is on Snap-on drive, then yes I would say that it would be a safe assumption that it is made by Snap-on.

They do not tell the dealers where stuff is made in a lot of cases. I say that the drill is made in Murphy, NC because that is where we are supposed to send one in the instance that it needs to be serviced.

My co-worker has the 18v. It throws sparks out the back and the first time I tried it, it just about snapped my wrist.

A+

here is already a thread about the 18V model click
Battery from japan, charger from China (website say USA), drill probably "assembled" in usa.

400$ for a cordless drill with outdated technology is pretty high. I rather would look into the 3 or 3.5 AH Panasonic Li-Ion drills or Makita, Hitachi etc. "more bang for the buck"

yeah I was drilling something out on the truck one day and let go with one hand and pulled the trigger and the bit stuck and SMACK right in the cheek bone. yes it does have some power.
Take a unibit and 1/4 steel tubing and see what drill will go all the way through without slowing down... my craftsman 19.2 will not do it....

Been multiple threads before on cordless drills..........but here goes again

What is best bang for the buck (possibly used) Cordless Drill (1/2") for the non pro
home owner.

I'm trying to avoid buying the newest, latest greatest trophy tool, but still want good battery life, reasonably powerful drill.............

Thanks

So, when are the SO models getting the Li-Ion batteries in lieu of the Ni-Cad? Will these models ship with the new Li-Ion? I'm not a SO fanatic so be patient with me.

I wonder if Snap-on actually services these -- here's what I mean: UPS has a business where they actually do repairs for appliances & whatnot for the brand. So, for example, if your Toshiba laptop computer needs to be serviced, you *think* you are sending your laptop to a Toshiba facility in the USA, but it is actually goes to UPS, where techs repair the computer & ship it back to you. Toshiba trains UPS to do the work.

So, I wonder if Snap-on actually repairs them... or, as a hand-held electrical appliance, I wonder if it goes to someone else like UPS.

I am 99.99% sure that Snap-on does not outsource the service or repairs on its cordless tools.

Snap On has already come out with Li-Ion batteries, and to top it all off they fit your existing tools, you will need to buy a new charger and and batteries, about $200, but the new batteries work in your existing tools and you can charge your old batteries with the new charger...I can asure you with Makita or Hitachi you would be buying a whole new drill....so its safe to say that Snap on is looking out for its customers!

The Murphy NC address is where Sioux Tools division of Snap on tools makes and services Snap on labeled cordless tools. They also made Craftsman branded cordless impact wrenches at this location also.

yes snap on does their own repairs. I send all of my tools to our western repair facility in carson city nevada.

Cordless tools with a GREEN terminal on the bottom where the battery slides into are li ion compliant. The red charger is what you will need....

Just because SO service the drill does not neccessary mean SO make the drill. I have a feeling the SO drill is a rebadged Hilti.

I am sure they make something better than the Milwaukee's, 28V that I use but I live from battery power. 200$ drills with 120$ battery on them. For home brew stuff you can get a pretty fair unit for about 80$ Its as good as the best was before this current generation of pro stuff especially for the diy crowd.

With the 14.4 Nicads we still did a lot of corded drilling, they just couldn't work long and hard enough but Lion batteries and high voltages made the leap to almost all cordless tools a reality. Fuel gages are revolutionary, being able to read the state of charge makes it a whole nother world.

The Hilti's that I just looked at online use a tower style battery and the new Snap-on uses a slide on style battery. I am just curious, what makes you think the Snap-on is a Hilti?

Hilti information
SF18-A: Tool body China, Batteries Poland, Charger Czech
SF121-A: China
SF151-A: China
SF144-A: Switzerland, Batteries Poland, Charger Czech

Still looks like SO is the only company that claims made in USA cordless drill.
