Hello again fellows,
I just bought a Craftsman 5 pc. Wood Chisel Set at sears for $29+tax and spent some quality time honing it and I got opinionated.
This guys are for the jobsite, however, they are gonna be the really sharp set. I got them for the 1/4" and 1"1/4 sizes mainly.
The original bevel is more than 30 degrees, and I left it like that. It projects 1" from the honing jig (25 degrees for a chisel is 1" 5/8 and 30 degrees is 1" 3/16)
My main complaint is that I could not get rid of the machined marks on the flat part of the chisel. I used 220 to try to get it flat but, at the very tip there was a gauge from the machining that i couldn't take out. Therefore I left the little scratch and I went up 400/800/1000 grit.
so, before using them, I would say its a great value but its gonna take some work to get them honed properly.
Their handle is quite big and it features a metal cap at the end for using a hammer. I prefer bench chisel size, oh well...
Made in the USA. The money stays within US.
