I keep my cheap screwdrivers jammed in a 2X4 block out in the open where the screwdrivers are exposed to fresh air. This way I don't have to worry about the stink.
Only if you keep the block outdoors. Those things can stink up a whole garage.

I have some old craftsman ones in my tool box and it's not that bad, the ones I'm posting about are zipped up in a tool roll in my truck, so it's pretty much worse case for humidity, heat, and being sealed in a confined space lol

I am in awe that two coats of poly didn't seal in the stank

Not long ago I packed up all of my quadruplicate and cheap hand tools and headed over to the local pawn shop with about 70# worth.
Included in the lot were every Craftsman acetate handle screwdriver I own, a few dozen, many of them never used. I was happy to get pennies on the dollar to never smell those %#@kers again.
I've been noticing "that smell" again in my basement. Seems I missed a set of C'Man nut drivers in the drawer of a toolbox dedicated for household use. They were still in the plastic case they were sold in perhaps 40 years ago. I snapped open that case and nearly gagged.
These are now marinating in my parts washer. I'll dry them up and go at 'em with a rattle can of clear something and report back.
Can't conceive how some could like that smell but would be quite happy to provide them with a cheap set of nutdrivers that will send them to nirvana.

EDIT:
FWIW I washed them up and sprayed with a clearcoat. This helped a lot but still a lingering odor. It was initially VERY strong, maybe they'll still air out. Moot point as I've decided to get rid of 'em and use my Klein set

Tekton screwdrivers don't stink. At least not that I have noticed. So I feel this thread discriminates against USA made screwdrivers, LOL.

I donate any tools that develop this smell. Life is too short… this is the kind of thing that makes it feel longer… not in a good way…

Any truck tools from the secondary market… those, I give to friends who are serviced by the truck. I have one or two Snap-on handles just starting to stink (sometimes after they start to turn chalky… they shrivel and crack. Almost as if a certain percentage of them evaporates out of their mass. It is weird to see. I would compare it to both melting and dry rot, but is neither. The chemical compound just breaks down in a gross way).

I still have tons of tools that could, at some point in the future, develop this. Some I would be sad to see go. The small xcellite nut drivers would be a loss. They are nice to use. You are definitely not going to over tighten anything with a tool this small.
