IMG_2926.jpegThis is the bottom view these only have USA and the socket size on them , No manufacturer logo. They appear to be 1/4 hex drive, I’ve never seen hex drive sockets before so I’m curious ?IMG_2927.jpegthis is top view 6pt except the last two pcs 1 has a 1/4” square drive in this end. The other pc I’m not sure if it’s been stripped out or if it has some sort of splines in it but it’s not a common splined socket either .IMG_2928.jpegSide view can read USA on themIMG_2929.jpegsizes 7/16 - 1/4” missing (1 socket )IMG_2930.jpegthese are the odd ones. 1) has a 1/4”hex in one end 1/4 square in the other 1) has 1/4” hex and either splines or has been stripped out in other end ?

The other pc I’m not sure if it’s been stripped out or if it has some sort of splines in it but it’s not a common splined socket either .
1/4” hex and either splines or has been stripped out in other end ?
It's factory, for screws that have a knurled head, commonly found on radio and electrical cabinets.

Thank you, I would have never thought of that ? I really thought that socket was junk ! These were all in a box I had decided to throw away, then I wire wheeled one of them for shits & giggles and noticed the USA stamp. So I pulled them from the trash, just to see if I had anything unique ?? Still don’t know if their unique or collectible ?

"Collectible", yes - although that's a pretty narrow market niche.
That set I posted above has been up on ebay for well over a year now.

"Unique" - to a degree, yes. They were one of very few makers of 1/4" hex drive sets, and one of the only ones to mark the sockets "U.S.A."
(Meteor stamped "U.S.A." on them, but they didn't make a hex drive set.)

That odd socket is described as a "radio" socket in some early catalog advertisements. As noted, used for the round, knurled nuts found in early radio equipment.

Thank you, Do you know the theory behind “Hex driven” as opposed to square drive ? Why would anyone want to use Hex drive instead of square drive ? Seems as though Hex never caught on ? Were they common in other countries ? Were Hex driven ever made in larger size sockets such as 9/16,” and larger say up to 15/16” or 1” ? As I said I had never seen Hex drive before, so sorry for all the questions but I’m just curious. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me !!

Here are a few hex drive sockets I have sitting around. A couple of the 1/4” drive are the same as your GM ones. IMG_6028.jpeg
Some 1/2” drive hex sockets and drive tools. IMG_6029.jpeg

So they did make them with a larger hex drive ? And I see you have a ratchet in a hex drive version ! Some reason I was envisioning using an allen wrench style tool to drive the sockets , was thinking that couldn’t be very handy ???The ratchet makes more sense, sometimes common sense slips my mind, my bad !! Once again I’d like to Thank everyone who have shared their knowledge of these tools and those in previous tool post I’ve made. I appreciate the willingness to share your knowledge and stories. I’m sure as I continue to pick up more “ treasures “ I’ll have more questions , What a Great forum and Great people. Thanks again Happy
