I'm looking for curved jaw locking pliers (vice grip) made in USA at a decent price. Any suggestions appreciated.

Malco Eagle Grip locking pliers.
Made in the old Vise-grip factory building in DeWitt, Nebraska, USA.
Available on Amazon but not inexpensive.

Pretty easy question. Old Peterson/Irwin Vise-Grips through ebay/classifieds or the new Malco ones that just started shipping this month.

every day since Malco locking pliers became available, I've seen multiple questions posted on various forums about where to find USA made locking pliers. first reply, of course, is an account with 6 posts in 9 years pointing out all the buzzwords and where to buy. i'm not sherlock holmes (i'm more like john holmes), but my elephant trunk sniffs something is a little off here.

I have a full house of a variety of Original vise grips. I stop at garage sales and buy a pair when I see them. They are usually the old Original vise grips too. No china junk.

They're also 'temporarily out of stock'. Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison with a pair of Peterson's?

Yes, I have an entire drawer full of Petersen's and Malco sent me a pair of Eagle Grips to test when they launched the product a couple of weeks ago. Visual comparisons indicate that the Eagle Grips are as good or better than the Peteresen's. Malco has added a couple of features to give extra strength to the pliers. Petersen attached the top jaw to the tool body with a brazed connecition. Occausionally I have observed a failure at the braze on Petersen Vise Grip resulting in a loose upper jaw. Malco still has the braze, but has added an additional rivet to secure the upper jaw. There have also added a continuious ring of metal ("Power Ring") at the point where the threaded adjustment screw connects into the tool body. Petersen's connection at this location was just a braze. I have never seen a pair of Petersen Vise Grips with a failure at that location, but Malco told me that they felt it was another weak point in the design that could be improved upon. The finish on the tools is superior to Petersen as Malco is tumbling the tool bodies in ceramic stones prior to assembly and this results in a smoother surface on the tool body (and likely less prone to the chrome failures than Petersen's were). Get your hands on a pair of Eagle Grips when you can and try them out. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

My main complaint with knock-offs is the soft jaw metal. My old Petersens are in better shape than any knock-offs I've got. The only complaint I had with the originals is that the plating was iffy.

I bought a Harbor Freight version several years ago while in Atlanta guring our family trip to fix a wheel on my suitcase. Right when I closed it to lock the head sheared right off. No loss at $5 and should have gone to Lowes or Home Depot to get an Irwin or Milwaukee and brought it home with me.

I ordered two curved jaw vice grips yesterday, one USA made, other Germany.
One has a wire cutter built in.
I have so many old USA made Craftsman tools and over time I discover ones have walked off. (We had different people here in garage years ago...but not now.)
I have straight jaw ones, mine and my Dad's (rip). I'm sure other's have needed a tool, remember having it only to discover it apparently was stolen.20210508_193747.jpg
