USB power outside for Amazon Alexa device

I’d like to have one of the small puck sized Alexa devices outside. We have an outlet in our bedroom that is right under a bow window that would give some shelter to Alexa.

I’d prefer not having a 120v receptacle outside there. It there a way to tap off the back of the bedroom outlet with a USB adapter that can then be used outside? Of course this can be done but I want it to pass code.

Thanks,

Jim

There is one for furniture mounting that takes 120v to power it. It costs 80 bucks doing a quick search. You still need a box with a cover and it will need to be custom or customized.

People are going to tell you that it's cheaper to put a GFCI in the existing box and feed a box mounted outside with a receptacle that has the USB ports. And they would be right.

I’m not hung up on the price aspect, but @Zeke second suggestion will give a clean and safe installation. You’ll have both 120 and USB outside for when you need it.

You can get a variety of USB outlets - the one I linked to also has a GFCI.

what type of USB adapter are we talking about? one that plugs into a receptacle? yeah youd need to tap a receptacle off the back of the bedroom receptacle.... and if the receptacle is outside, youd need a GFCI receptacle with a WP in-use cover....

What about a battery base for the Amazon Echo Dot you are talking about?

I have a third generation Echo Dot, with a battery base, that we use outside all the time. We use it to control our deck speakers, some lights, and other stuff. We even use it as a stand alone little speaker when we are out in the garden or doing some painting or whatnot around the outside of the house.

You attach the Echo Dot to the battery base and the base supplies power to the Echo Dot. It lasts for up to 8 hours or more, depending on if we use it as a little speaker to listen to music or use it to control the music coming from our deck speakers. The battery base uses the power cord that came with the Echo Dot to re-charge it.

They sell battery bases for every Echo Dot generation now, even the newer ball shaped Dots.

Here is the one I have. We have had this for about 3 years now, and it really makes it easy to take your Echo Dot anywhere. We have even used it at the beach to play music from our cell phones. It works great!
