use collated nails with a hammer?

I failed my sheathing inspection today because the inspector wanted extra nails around the perimter of the garage door opening. He said because I don't have 4 feet of framed walls on 1 side of the building that I need to extra up on the nails.

I have a bunch of extra nail coils. Can I just cut the wire with a wire cutter and nail them in with a hammer? Or must I go rent a framing nail gun to get that last part done?

I do that all the time, especially with roofing nails. Just clip them with side cutters and hammer away. Not something I would do if a large amount of nails are required.

I'm not aware of any "rules" about HOW the nails get into the wood.

2015 IRC Table R602.3(3) is attached and gives requirements for nail diameter & penetration. As long as those nails meet these requirements, you are good to go.

The table also shows the spacing for the nails, but it sounds like he wants a little more. Might as well stay on his good side...

If he has under a specific amount of SW portal framing is needed, which needs nails approx every 3”....but also requires a continuous header. Perhaps the OP already has that?

I don't have a continous header but he did advise that if he was approving the plans beforehand he would have required a continuous header.

nails driven by any method are nails driven.

Nail gun nails are thinner and bend easier (especially if you hit a knot).

Just cut them loose and pound them in. Make the nice man happy, so you can get finished. He's really not asking much.

I'm not complaining about the nail patterns lol that's an easy fix.... My biggest issue is he wants me to change the bracing on the trusses. That seems a little more complicated.
