I have a 3/4" chuck that was out of round on the drill press I bought, and replaced.

For some reason, it seems like I should make something from it instead of throwing it away.:spit: Does anybody have ideas of what it might be good for:confused:

You can get new jaw and bearing kits for the Jacobs ball bearing chucks such as the 18N. My 18N was bought used on Ebay, already set in an arbor of the correct taper (#3MT if I recall) and it had a 5 or 6 thousandth wobble in it. I was unable to separate the two parts and let it sit a year or so. Finally took it to work and gave it to one of the machinist who was able to separate the arbor from the chuck (liquid nitrogen works wonders) and then cleaned and reseated the two parts. He tested it in something in the shop, a vertical mill I think and then I took it home and indeed, as he said, I have only about one thousandth run out on it, possibly not that.

Moral of the story, if you haven't taken it apart and cleaned and reseated the pieces, do so.

depending on the brand and age, some of them can be taken apart and rebuilt

It's 100% brand new, it's machined wrong for the arbor. It has .018 runout. The new chuck has .0005 runout or so.

As a chuck, it's junk.

You can cut the shaft off the arbor and use it in your hydraulic press. These type of items come in handy.

the arbor is not part of the chuck, as explained before. This post is old, it's being used for a paper weight at the moment.
