Use Momentary Switch to toggle a relay?

Okay, I want to add lights and a garage door remote to my Zero Turn. The control panel of my Zero Turn has an existing cut out with a blank for a standard Toyota Style switch. I have found an online vendor who sells the a Dual switch that fits the opening. They will even apply custom text and graphics. The problem is I can only get the switch in an ON-OFF or a Momentary configuration. So both switches must be the same. Using the momentary for the garage door remote is an easy hack. But how do I use a momentary to toggle the relay for the lights? One click turns the lights on, a second click turns the lights off.

I really don't want to drill another hole in the control panel if I don't need too.

Loop the output of the relay to the control line. Output is normally dead until the first trigger, once it is hot you have a continuous power feed to the control line. Turn off the mower, source power to the relay is removed, lights goes out...

Use an inline diode (after the MC switch, after the opener, but before the relay) to keep from back-feeding power to the garage door controller.

To do what you described (lights click on, click off) would require a bit more work and the use of logic circuits. Multiple clicks will still work on the garage door opener though.

As I'm still on my first cup of coffee, that's all I had this morning... Others will have better ideas. (y)

You can buy a latching relay to do that. I believe you can also configure it with two four standard relays but my brain is a bit foggy at the moment. Google latching relay or bi-stable circuit with momentary switch. It's very easy to make a standard relay latch on with momentary switch the issue becomes turning it off with second push.

ETA you would need four relays with one momentary switch or two relays with two momentary switches. It would be easier to just buy a latching relay with required circuitry or just use a standard toggle switch. As stated above you can easily make a relay latch on with momentary switch but the lights would stay on once turned on until you shut mower off if you configured it that way. Diagram below would toggle power on and off with each push of switch.

What does the opening look like / measure ? I find it hard to believe that there isnt a double switch available that will do momentary on one half and on/off on the other.

Plug.jpgIt is like 1.5 inches by 0.8 inches. I have found plenty of dual switches, but they are all either both Momentary or both ON-OFF latching.

It's possible to wire up a latch/unlatch with a momentary button using 4 standard relays as cgrutt suggested in post #3. But it does take up a fair amount of room in what could be an already cramped compartment.

I've used these in the past for exactly these kinds of applications. 1 of these and 1 standard relay. Done.

Get the momentary and remove the spring from one side. Or get both and get the detents too. Likely the same casting.

You can probably use this either standalone or with another standard relay but it's aparently rated for 10A. I'm sure there are others.

Latching Relays like used in TouchMatic lighting systems change their state every time they are pulsed.
