Hi all,

I've been looking for a used 2-stage compressor for my new home shop and came across this on Craigslist-

http://denver.craigslist.org/tls/2286823052.html

Emailed the seller and he said that he's had it since 2004 when he got it from a shop that closed. Since then it's been sitting because he never had 230 run to his garage. Can any of you give me advice/opinions on this compressor and if it's worth what he's asking for it? Any way to check it out while onsite without running it? Concerns about it having sat for a long time? I wouldn't be able to take it and plug it it right away as my new garage is being built so getting something that doesn't work and not finding out about it is a concern. Any help and/or advice would be appreciated!

its a little small... Minimum u should go for is 15 to 16 cfm
and offer a hi 500 bucks for it at max.

The comp should b o.k just ask for run demo.. And also change fluids b 4 using.

seems a bit high for the specs

A BIT???? ;) It's WAY too much....IMO. That CFM rating actually might be a mistake - it's THAT low! I've never heard of a 5 HP at 11cfm. Mine is 18cfm @ 100psi.

For $800 (maybe a little more) I think you can get a NEW 15cfm 2 stage in the US. Mine was $900 and it's a 220V, 3 piston, 2 stage, 60 Gal, 18.5 cfm @ 100psi, 175psi max Unit.

Thanks guys- looking at their current catalog, they do still make a 5hp (peak) model which indeed does make only 11cfm, so I would assume that this is the older version of that model.

So if I could get this for $500, would it be worth it for a home shop, or would it be better to save my money and get something bigger/better?

Good quality compressor... the motor is so-so. I would not pay more than $400 for it, and only if it is clean and needs nothing.

Will it be enough for you? Maybe. For a one-man shop, it will handle most tasks. It will not be enough air for a sandblaster, DA sander, or pneumatic grinder; unless you like waiting for the pump to catch up.

Oh, and it is most assuredly not 5hp... the nameplate HP rating may be "5 SPL", but a true 5hp two stage compressor will move about 17cfm at 175psi. A real 5hp motor will have an FLA of at least 25a (assuming single phase, 230v).

5 HP, even "peak" is stretching it. Likely 2.5 running HP. (I see the current stats say 3 running HP)

Thanks for the advice all, guess I'll have to keep looking to see if something better comes along...

Yup- based on their current model specs, this is 3 running HP..

Guess the dealbreaker would be the sandblaster- big motivation for getting a larger compressor than I have right now would be to do media blasting of frames and body panels. Based on this then would tank size be more important than the pump size?

FYI, That compressor pump is a cast aluminum unit and is not US-Made. That is Taiwan import, those began showing up in the mid 80s, and now you can source the equivalent pump from several Chinese suppliers.
