How do you guys dispose?
My local municipality limits size to 1 gallon jugs, it is two blocks away and a free service. I can drop them on my way to work in about two minutes...super easy.
The pain is always draining everything into 1 gallon containers.

Does anyone have a clever way of draining into multiple 1 gallon containers directly?
Does anyone else have to dispose in one gallon containers?

I take mine to autozone. iIf you have one in the area - they have huge barrels, you can take as much as you can carry and fill them up.

Since I change everything at work I just dump it straight in the oil burner. For the quads and other toys I have a spill proof drain pan to fill and take there

My oil drain uses compressed air to empty so I use two 5 gal gas containers to take the oil to the Advance autoparts to dispose. My local Autozone will only take a couple gals at a time. The Advance auto has never said anything to me for bringing 10 gal at a time.

I change oil mainly at work so it isn't an issue. But for the lawn mower I use a old kitty litter jug, if you can find one in a gallon size they work great because the lid opening is a good 2 1/2 inches or so. Makes filling them a lot easier.

transferring into a gallon jug is a pia. I put my jug (5 qt. oil jug) in a plastic tote before pouring the oil from the drain pan into it, via a funnel. That way the spillage ends up in the tote, rather than on the floor or ground. I also put the full jugs in the tote for transport to Wal-Mart to keep any oil off of the truck or car trunk.

I put mine in a five gallon bucket with a lid and dump it in the waste oil tank at work. A company buys our waste oil, so it's a win win for everybody.

Transfer from kitty liter catch pan to 5 gallon pail. When its full, I take it to my dads shop where they burn it for heat. Also Advance Auto takes any and all auto fluids. Ive taken 15 gallons of coolant/water after a system flush and they had no problems with it.

I don't know about draining into multiple 1 gallon jugs at once, but here are some funnels that you could use to fit gallon milk jugs. Don't know if they screw on. That might be even better if you can find. Get a few.

Sort of implied by the name but they recycle it...It is re-refined and re-sold.

Burning it is recycling. They are taking waste and converting it into something useful. Heat. They make used oil furnaces just for this reason.

Drain into a quarter barrel. When it is full, drain into a 55 gal drum. When it is full, take it to my buddy's electric motor shop and trade for an empty drum. He has a free pickup service. He services a lot of oil filled pumps.

And to answer the OP, I take my used engine oil/diff oil/trans oil/coolant to my local recycling center for disposal/recycling. They do not care what size container you bring it in so long as you bring it to them.

To put it in a gallon jug or whatever, without a mess, I have replaced my drain plug with a Fumoto valve. Put a hose on it and you are golden. It works fantastically.

Bc they only get a recycler to drain their tanks every so often and many have shops of their own adding to the problem.

I just put the lid on my drain pan and take it in to the parts stores the next time Im out in town. 2-3 gallons, even mixed with coolant and other **** never gets looked at twice by the minimum wage staff. 2 mins and Im in/out of whichever of the half dozen or so I pass daily.

Not a good idea my friend. The dirt and **** in the used oil can and will cause damage to your diesel's fuel injection system. The tolerances within the fuel system make the bottom end of an engine downright roomy. So if the oil is bad enough to need changing, ask yourself is it worth using it in super expensive part of your truck?

Using the oil for heat is recycling. The recyclers hauling the oil around will put out more emissions than a commercial made waste oil heater/boiler, then you factor in the chance of a wreck and spill where the oil will become useless. The EPA recommends waste oil kept on-site and burned in UL listed waste oil heater/boiler for people that generate a substantial amount of oil than traveling around in a tanker.

I don't know why any recycler would complain, they get PAID for used oil. The only reason I can think that the municipality might limit is they might not have the capacity to handle a bunch at once.

I store mine in a few 5-gallon buckets then when they are full I take it to the jiffy lube.

Back to the getting paid part, they usually have a minimum of like 200+ gallons for pickup.

Laws vary by state, but most require any service station to accept used oil. Likewise any place that sells a bunch of new oil must accept used oil...

I had a mess in the shed about ten years ago. I'm not sure how long it sat but probably six months or more.

Now I make sure to keep a few spare five quart jugs for the old oil.

A gallon of free waste oil heats my shop for an hour. This would solve your messy gallon jug issue pronto. Make sure there is no water or coolant mixed in !

This also eliminated any cradle to grave liabilities for waste. The furnace is the grave.

I too burn mine in my '02 F350 Powerstroke. I have a per filter before the lift pump and then there is the standard fuel filter which will catch anything that gets by the first filter. A diesel is an oil burning engine and will burn any hydrocarbon you can get through the pumping system. I almost ran out of fuel once in the middle of Nevada. It started to sputter. I had a new pail of ATF and poured that into the rear tank and was able to drive another 50 miles to a truck stop.
The truck doesn't smoke or smell any different than on regular diesel.
I would not do it with a newer diesel though, the computer won't like it.
I have probably 100,000 miles on used lube oil in this truck out of a total of 280,000 miles.

I take mine to O'reilly's because it's down the street. Pretty sure WalMart takes it too. Our local WM just recently started taking it too I believe. I dump my drain pans into bulk laundry detergent jugs while I'm cleaning up during an oil change. They have nice large spouts that are easy to pour in to and don't drip when you pour from them. They're also HDPE (just like gas tanks and oil bottles) and are almost as thick as a gas can. My favorite jugs are the Ecos ones I get at Sam's Club. They're 1.6 gallons and hold up to both sun and snow (I store them outside) for at least a couple years.

I too burn it in my Lanair used oil furnace in my shop, along with all of the oil I can collect from friends and co-workers. I like it in the 5 qt jugs it comes in, no chance of condensation, and I know they drained it and poured it right back in, so no contaminates like brake fluid or antifreeze. Currently I am down to about 125 gallons or so. Will spend all summer collecting more.

If you don't know someone to take it for a furnace, do everyone a favor and take it to a Wal-Mart or a auto parts place that take oil, almost all do. Please don't dump it in trash or pour it on the ground.
