Used Jointer/Planer Recommendation

I'm in the market for a used 6" Jointer/Planer. I think the little 4" units are just too small. I'll use it at home for some woodworking. What brands/models are recommended as well as what brands/models to stay away from? How old is too old? I'm assuming most older equipment is cast iron and solid but what about the motors? I'm also assuming most, if not all, the imports from China are not worth buying.

there is no such thing as too old its a case by case basis
most old planers are heavy iron which is good. the bearings are very basic and can be swapped for new by taking the old bearings to a bearing supply house.
the motors are generally just a generic motor with a pully on the end of it
the blades can be resharpened easily.

its all about condition and price on the older larger stuff

I agree that long bed is better. But they are so simple that chinese is fine so long as everything is in spec and that is very easy to test. But without a doubt any old american iron is better and I would take old over chinese anyday. From my experience shopping for them, most these days seem to come from the same factory in china from Harbor Freight to JET and maybe others. I have a generic and sold my JET as it was no better.
