Used Knipex Cobras, Buy or Pass?

I have lots of pliers, but no Knipex. Reading threads here have me curious about them.
I was in a local pawn shop and they had 2 Knipex Cobra pliers. The metal looked very good, the handles were decent with some grease on them. I didn't get the sizes, but I suspect they are the 10" and 7". I got them talked down to $30 out the door for both sets, but couldn't get them any lower. Are these worth going back to get, or should I leave them there at that price?

I think it would depend on how worn the jaws are, if not much wear it sounds like a fair deal.

They run 25-30 bucks each normally. If the jaws are in good shape and they slide freely then 30 bucks for both wouldnt be a bad deal. I wouldnt worry about grease on the handles as long as the jaws and slide are in good shape.

Yep, depends on how worn the jaw teeth are.

I wouldn't buy a used pair for more than $20, personally. But then, I got my Cobras brand new at Lowe's a few years back when they had the 7"/10" 2-pack for $22. Screaming deal I know, but I couldn't in good conscience pay more for used tools than I paid for new.


edit: Craftsman-branded Cobras (2-pack) can often be had for about $40 brand new during sales. Same exact thing as the Knipex branded ones, made in Deutschland.

$15 each is worth considering, but the jaws are wear items so...YMMV

My view on tools like this is sort of the opposite of normal, ie if you will replace it because you use it alot buy used at a fair price...makes sense and any wear is just a shorter use interval....if its not something you expect to get alot of use out of buy a new one and you will never need to replace it...if you have to replace it prematurely it is a huge extra expense and thus not worth it for saving 5 or 15 bucks.

The craftsman re-badged Knipex Cobras go on sale for about $27 for the 7" & 10" set from time to time. If you have some SYW points you can get them for even less - brand new. Watch the sales.

Thanks guys. The laws did appear to be in good shape on these, but I think I'm going to pass and let someone else pick them up. The more I thought about it, there are a lot of other tools I need right now other than a standard set of pliers. Maybe I'll wait until the Craftsman branded set goes on sale and pick those up. I don't mind waiting for a good deal in this case since I don't need them immediately.

I'd i were you I'd wait for the pliers set to go on sale on Mobil tool distributors.com. At a good sale price your not too far off the used price. Knipex stuff is **** when fresh. But that's just me. [emoji1]

I'm cheap so, I would pass. I know bargains often depend on location but, I don't think I've paid more than $5 for a pair of Knipex cobras or alligators in great condition. If you don't need them wait.
