Used metal building - building permit

Good morning all.
A fellow here in town has a 24x24 metal building for sale. Exactly what I was looking for. He bought it disassembled and never put it up. The problem is we don’t know who the manufacturer of the building is so I cannot supply my town building department stamped plans.
I’ve reached out to a couple of places that sell similar units to ask for a set of plans to pass them off as the one I have, but only one has gotten back to me and wanted $1500 for stamped plans.
Anyone deal with this issue before?…what was your experience and what did you ultimately end up doing? I’d hate to pass on this building, but if the town won’t permit it, it’s worthless regardless of the perceived great deal.

Your location has everything to do with your proposed metal building project.

Could you perhaps get a permit to erect a building of your own design from salvaged materials?

If you must have a permit, and you can’t get one; you are “Dead in the Water” with no way to proceed.

If you can clap together a shack or shed from salvaged materials you might make some progress.

At this point, without a way to get a permit the owner of the disassembled building is the owner of scrap. If you can not get it erected the value is Scrap, minus the cost of hauling it to the Scales.

As a metal building supplier and erector I have seen this often. Without plans the building is scrap metal. However there are areas that have no building departments and the building could be sold there.

I would be very careful with someone willing to sell plans for that building. Sounds pretty dodgy. Will they take responsibility if the building has problems down the road?
I don’t know where you are and if there are specific wind and snow loads to take into consideration.

If the building has been sitting for a while the sheets may be unusable. If they have been exposed to moisture they can be affected by what the trade calls “white rust” which will damage the finish and appearance.

After all that the short answer is walk away.

Unless you live where you can skate away without any permits under farm exempt or otherwise I’d pass

Sort of like buying a car without a title and trying to register it.

Some places it can be done, but other places it’s difficult to even scrap it.

Run away, is probably the best advice.

And there are alot of places where it’d be okay just for animals and hay storage. Probably the only legitimate use for that building. Real good chance there could be white rust on the sheets, too.
