for used metal you can look local for a metal scrap yard or you can look for a company local that sells new metal and see if they have any damaged material you can get for a bargain

I won't tell ya to go dumpster diving cause I wont... I have good luck with a scrap yard out here that sells new stuff and give a excellent discount for rusty "new" stuff. I guess people are scared to do a little cleaning.
I am in Oshkosh.. Yea I know I about fell over when the owner said "how about 10 bucks?" I doubt I'll get that lucky ever time, But I did that time

I have had the same experience at the shop where i get my structural steel fabricated. They have a huge roll-off that they fill with scrap, What is little scrap to them is often plenty for a home project. I have found pieces of angle, tube, bar and flat stock in there and when I'm there to order a job, the dumpster stuff is usually free!
Keep your eyes open on garbage days, no end to the good stuff being tossed out. Tubing (chairs, hockey nets, misc furniture), sq. tubing (desks, office dividers, etc.) sheet metal (stoves, washers, dryers, etc.), bed rails. Weights and the accompanying bars, usually at least 1" dia.
Got some 1/2" X 3 1/2" X 5 Ft. galvanized bars from a neighbour's old fence. And, some 3/8" X 4" X 4 Ft. bar and misc. tubing and pipe all tossed out by a local Go-Kart track. Saw some 1" anchor ("J" Bolts) over there yesterday and on my my over to get them too!
Guy on the next street thoughtfully dismantled his stove last week which yielded painted 18 Ga. and 22 Ga. sheets of galvanized and porcelainized steel..........good for many projects.
Can't remember the last time I had to buy any steel for a project, usually design around what I have, and watch out for anything else needed.

Just be careful cutting and welding metals of unknown origin. Lead in paint and heavy metals like in galvanized steel can be deadly. I'm a bottom feeder too, and usually work outdoors to minimize the risk. I have tons of 2" square tubing, laced with yellow lead paint.

+1 Yup... My son works for a manufacturer and they let him bring home stuff gratis all the time. I have a good collection of 12" sq plate 1/4 to 3/8 thk; some 5/8 plate; and a bunch of 10 ga sheet typically 1' X 5'.
My local steel yard sells anything left from cutting for 70-80 cents/lb (steel).

I don't know how far north in NY you are, but we have a steel company here that has a scrap room. It has a good supply of everthing you would normally use. Four feet or shorter lengths. It is sold by the pound.
O.K. . I should say NOT covered in rust... The joint by me (where I get mine from) sells new stuff that is SOMEWHAT clean. They do dump their severely nasty stuff by the pound. Nothing wrong with it. Just takes A LOT of prep.

i have buddy that owns a recycling business. he gets my scrap for free and i get project materials free as well, i just don't take advantage.
I have been buying a fair amount of steel lately and prices are typically running in the $0.75/lb range and that is cut to specific lengths/sizes. The piece of 110ksi was about a buck a pound for the blank that went to the machine shop.

Scrap yards around here charge 10 cents to 40 cents a pound.
