Used Motor Oil - Need Suggestions

I have a TON of used motor oil. I'm hoping to find a good way to use it to burn. I have a 55 gallon wood stove I use to heat my garage in the winter and pool in the summer. Is there a way to use that motor oil to help the barrel get hotter? Or, is there a good set up any one knows to burn the oil solo?

Thanks in advance.

They make waste oil heaters that are designed to just burn waste oil. Unless you run a shop I don't know that it is cost effective to buy a heater just to heat your shop with waste oil. I haven't ever really looked for a cost effective way to burn it home. With a little money there isn't anything that can't be done.

when I was younger I use to soak wood chips in oil to use as a hot burn starter for the old coal furnace we had in the house . boy did it make it light off so much faster.

if you need to get ride of it then see if local auto shop has waste oil burner and wants it .

otherwise most oil collection shops like parts stores have 5 gal max per day drop off limit.

I havnt run across in years but searching backwoods/self contained cabin/ recycle sites etc. and your handy with fabing stuff, oil burner plans are out there. A little research required. (I dont know if anything here-havnt looked).
The ones I recall used a preheater, once hot oil dripped onto it, cast iron skillet in one build I saw, vaporizing and burning quite well. Seems like a an isolated or double wall so only radiated heat seen, trick I think would be efficiency, minmizing soot carbon.

I saw a redneck woodburning heater with a waste oil "dripper" line. He had a reservoir with a brake line feed and a shutoff valve. It was outside and I don't know how safe it was.

You heat the pool in the SUMMER? :shocking:

Dude, I live in Northern MN. I have yet to get my pool above 82 deg, which might seem refreshing except our day time temps are usually around 75...with any bit of wind and it is freezing when you get out. Plus, night gets down to mid 50's...and this goes on ALL "summer".

Years ago we had the same set up. It worked great and never had any "flare" ups or fire burning out of control.

Your user profile doesn't list your location, but how many people in MN have a pool anyway? I have one here in NC and it's a PITA money pit filled with water.

FYI, my pool is about 90-92F when it's open for summer.

You can burn it in a barrel stove but do it properly otherwise you are going to have thick black smoke belching out the flue pipe and the neighbors wont be happy!

Why don't you call around and see how much you can get 4 it. I have heard of shops getting up to 1.25 per gallon for it.

Also, how much do you have? I use 300 gallons a year to heat my 40x50 shop. I keep it very warm and I have a steady supply. If I upgraded my set up I could cut that in half.

So it depends on what you have and what you will take in, in the future. You do not want to build a waste boiler and not have a supply of oil.

That all said, I would make a water to water boiler for the pool. I keep my 30 foot pool at 90 for me and the kids. I am in Wisconsin, a pool without a heater is useless.

I have a similar issue with hating to part with accumulated waste oil. I've tried burning small amounts in the wood stove, but the drips on the floor and heavy black smoke made me stop doing it.

Besides, my garage is worth more to me than the few BTUs I'm recovering.

I bring mine to the county transfer station for recycling now.

I don't want to get rid of it, I want to use it. Do you have pictures and/or plans on how you made a water to water boiler for your pool? I think that is a great idea. Thanks!

I burn all my old motor oil and ATF in my 89 F350. I just pour it right into the fuel tank, a gallon or more at a time.

When I was in VN, we had a drip oil water heater near the mess hall. The night baker would go out and start the drip and light it up. Never had any problems with it. Just a 'pan' under a huge tank.

I think I remember a guy on pirate building a pretty serious one a few years ago. Had a real controller for heat and to ensure ignition.

If you have a old diesel engine they will burn it mixed in with the fuel. Considered adding it to my powerstroke but don't really want to give the injectors a reason to clog up. Tempted to see how it does on the little kubota

A diesel tech at a dealership I worked with ran straight used atf in his 7.3 powerstroke that he got from flushes and changes. He ran it all through a strainer before putting it in the tank, but he drove from mass to south carolina with only atf in the tank. Said he averaged a few mpg better.

There is a pretty good thread on here somewhere of a guy who turned a regular oil furnace into a waste-oil furnace. He has a couple of years of experience with it now and posts/posted updates.

Around here, people who upgrade/replace furnaces and boilers often post the old ones on Craigslist for free. If you don't mind moving it, you could get an oil furnace possibly for free and convert it. You'd have some money in the conversion, but if you have a regular supply of waste oil, you could heat your house or shop for free. It would be labor intensive, and you instantly become your own HVAC technician because nobody else will know how to keep it running, but it's an attractive option for those with a regular supply of used oil.

EDIT: Link for the project I mentioned above is here

I want to build a waste oil burner at some point. This one is probably more elaborate than I want to do but this is one of the best ones I've seen.

I have a M1941 stove (US Military surplus). When I first got it I looked up using used motor oil. Take a look at this forum: http://steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?16129-Oil-Burner-Conversion-for-M1941-Heater
