Ok, I have always just had my oil changed but something just changed my mind. I have a 93 F150 beater truck with the 300 6 in it and The other day I started it and it was knocking so I shut it right off. I started it a couple of other times and it would do it and then stop, then sometimes seem not to do it at all. I was at my "real" parts store (complete with a one armed guy at the counter) and asked them what they thought. He asked what kind of filter I had on it and how many miles it had. I answered a fram and 147,000. He told that fram are now made in china and are of dubious quality. He said that I am getting a "dry" start and that is the number one main bearing slapping until the oil gets up there. He sold me 15 w 40 oil and a wix brand filter and it quieted right down.
My question is how do you guys get rid of the used oil, what type of pan would make it easier to dump it in the empty bottles, and where is the best deal on olil? I saw it at costco and am going to check out cost there. I want to start doing all my cars.
