I understand that used compressor prices vary greatly depending on a ton of different factors.. But for the sake of conversation, I found an 80 gallon 5hp 705, semi locally on the good ol CL. Guy still has it as of this morning. I asked him how old it was, and if there were any issues. He bought it used, said it had "just been rebuilt" and that he's not sure on age. And that there weren't any issues that he was aware of, also that he hadn't used it commercially.

All sounds good and dandy, but without going there and hearing it run first, it's obviously hard to gauge overall condition.

Onto price.... He's asking $1200. Do you guys think that's a decent price on one or is he high? I haven't been able to find many for sale near me to compare to. I imagine it's because once most people buy them, they hang onto them.

I'm not sure if I want to jump on it yet, but I do know that SB is pretty much a buy 1 and be done sorta deal. I have zero interest in buying a cheapo chinesium special and have to replace them down the road. Buy once, cry once. Any insight on prices would be helpful. I've been researching compressors for about a month now, and I've determined I want to stick with a GOOD, USA made compressor. Thanks for any and all insight, as per usual.

If freshly rebuilt, why is he selling it? Does he have proof of rebuild? I paid $500 for mine on auction from the company I worked for, and I was the one who had maintained the unit. I sometimes see them $800 and up.

That was my first question too. Seems a little strange, but hard to say honestly. I could ask him, or go look at it in person and ask. But yeah if I found one for $500 I'd have it in my truck asap. I've been seeing (what I can find anyway) $1000 and up myself. I've searched most of my state and also fleabay to come up with the prices that I have found.

Kill, I was just like you 3 yr ago looking for a keeper. Found my used Saylor Beall at a compressor repair shop, and couldn't be happier. Mine had been used by a printing co. and they needed a bigger unit. Shop recommended the unit and I think I paid something like $12-1300 for the 1 yr old machine. They are great machines, and if the one your looking at hasn't been used to hard or abused, I would say go for it. As RJ said, try to find out WHY it had been rebuilt and who did the rebuild? Listen to it run and trust your instincts. Try to bargain as best you can and take it home and use it. Saylor Beall are one of the top compressors on the market, and serious overkill for most home shops, but you won't regret having all that canned air at your fingertips. Good luck and keep us updated.

These are from his ad. I'm not sure. It seems like a "fair" deal at best. It doesn't look too bad, but again unless I go to look at it I won't know for sure. It's about an hour from my house, and I won't be available to check it out until Monday. I'll look at the tag to get a date if I check it out. I just don't want someone else's headache is all. I've had enough of that recently. 00V0V_663VUM38uxW_600x450.jpeg00b0b_42dxyeforic_600x450.jpeg

As with anything used, the only thing that determines price is what the market is willing to pay for it. If you're the only market, then start low. Offer him 800 unless he has other offers you're willing to work with him.

I got my 703 for $400. It is a nice little machine. I gave about $700 for my pressure lube 707, but I had to buy a single phase motor and do a little work on it.

That's a good pickup I'd imagine! Recoup some of the money selling the 3 phase and you're set.

This thing has been listed for 16 days... I'm thinking I can get him off $1200 a bit.

If you are going to pull the “buy once” card, get a new one, not someone’s cast off with a dubious, undocumented rebuild.

I have a well used Champion myself, that I got cheap, along with a similar IR, but, in the end, they are both someone’s castoffs.

I would go new in a do-over.
