Used Snap-On Box?

Hi all,

I need to upgrade my tool storage to match a lot of newly acquired tools. I'm considering several new options from big box store products to Tekton and several in between. However, I ran across this used Snap-On box for sale down the road from me. The ad doesn't give any details on it, but it looks to be about 50 ish inches wide by 25+" deep which is the approximate size I'm looking for. It's listed at $2500. I know nothing about Snap-On boxes. Can anyone ID the model? Given the picture, is the price in the ballpark for one of these?

Agreed, looks like a 722. 54 wide, 24 deep. Nice box, best color choice.

That's a good price on one especially if you like the color. It seems they don't usually go much lower than that locally but if you want a specific color you're waiting a long time or paying more. They move at 2500 regularly, but if it's some wacky color they seem to sit.

I expect some room for easy cash sale, perhaps 2K or 2,200, I would want it A1 no dents, all good drawer liners and supplied with all keys for 2.500 .
It a smarter buy than any gig box store options and will retain value so you loose nothing or close to nothing if need sell it on .
Nobody is paying 8k for these off the truck, 4K is the more normal price pending on exact box options .

Not sure about the depth but it looks identical to my KRL1022. That's a pretty decent price if the paint is clean and no dents.

You are correct, I missed two of the drawers in the OP's picture.

For $2200.00 you should already be loading it in your truck. My oldest SO box is coming up on 35 years old and ball bearing slides still work as good as they did the day I rolled it off of the tool truck in 1989.

Thinking about getting it but I don't know. I do need a bigger box though.

Looks like the same box I have. I paid $1,800 in great condition with all the liners & both keys. I wish it had the SS top though. Maybe my wonky color devalues it some . I’m happy with it, it’s a nice box

I see alot of these boxes on FB Market place being sold by younger folks that probably purchased them with their Student Discount. Is there anyway to verify that there isn't any money owed to a dealer for these boxes?

If you would need to warranty anything and they ask for the serial # and it comes back as not paid for, I would imagine that would be a problem that I'd rather not deal with.

Ah! Now comes the age old question, Should I be able to warranty something that I bought used? Snappy's stance I believe is no. So in which case they wouldn't warranty it anyways since you are the second owner.

My stance is that yes you should be able to. I wonder if they would ask for the serial number? I would imagine yes but just curious... You could always find another image of a paid for box on the internet and just give them that number instead.

Looks like a 722 to me also. Should be a sticker on the side or back with the model number.

2500 seems fair if it's in good shape.

Yeah. A post earlier said a less than basic color might bring down the value of a used box and I agree. If I’d have had my druthers, I’d have extreme green Anything other than red or black will most likely appeal to someone who doesn’t care, or that’s the color they want

I do like the box though and it’s packed full. I have a (HF) cart too that I keep the stuff I use most often

So it was a KRL722 and it was practically perfect; barely even used. He had the keys, owner's portfolio, the un-installed side handle, and even the plastic cover it was shipped with. We agreed on a price and I came home with it. It's deeper than suggested above - 29" including the trim. It does have plastic drawer latches similar to the HF Series 3 boxes that I don't care for. Anyone know if they're easy to remove like the HF boxes?

I suggest giving them a chance. I didn’t care for them at first but they kind of grew on me. My HF cart has similar but I much prefer the ones on the SO box. I don’t mind them at all now

I'll leave them for a little while, mainly because I'm lazy. But I did find a YouTube video showing how to remove. It's really easy so I can pull them at any time.

One other question for the GJ experts: is there anyway I can determine the manufacture date from the label on the back?

But basically they started in 98 0r 99 using the first letter in the serial number to correspond to the year made. so if your serial number starts with an 'A' your box is a 98 or 99 and so on. I have 4 different SO boxes, and this alpha timeline seems to be accurate.

If someone has a better way of dating them, I would love to hear it.

Thanks, Boogerman. This box won't move unless I move houses, so I'm not worried about needing to keep the drawers latched shut. As long as they stay closed on their own on a flat surface, that's all I need.

The plastic latches take about 5 seconds to remove. I remove mine whenever I wax the box. At the far right of each drawer pull, you'll see how they're attached. With the latches removed, don't even think about moving the box without locking the drawers.

The SO guy I used to have knew I was buying boxes and other stuff used and didn’t care. ( I was buying new stiff from him too). Most of the time he never even looked at the boxes, I gave him the model number and he would gt me new slides for them, as long as I was giving the old ones back to him so he could send them back.
The only time he told me no, I had bought a used roll front box that had fatigue cracking in the front corners. I showed him pictures and he smiled and said “you got the life out of that box”.
I just said “ok” and welded the corners up

After transferring my tools from my old makeshift storage solution (vintage bank cabinets), I realized 2 things: 1) several of the drawers are very shallow and only appropriate for thin hand tools laid flat, and 2) I severely underestimated my storage needs. 2 tends to be a universal problem around here, so I'll focus my question on 1.

How do you guys with similar boxes handle the limited height storage issue? I'm running into interference with rubber mallets, tape measures, and even a thick bag of zip ties. With running out of storage already, I was looking at the tool organizers like from Tekton to gain some space back. But I'm not sure that is applicable across the board. Sure, you can stand wrenches up on an angle and probably be OK, but I don't think the same could be said of pliers for instance. How are you guys solving this problem?

1. The heavy tools like hammers go in the lower drawers of the tool box. This also helps with stability, having the heavier stuff towards the ground (also air tools and battery powered tools).

2. You’d be surprised what can fit in the shallow drawers. I have shallow top drawers in an older Snap-On box and was shocked to see that on the shallowest drawers they had no issue holding a 3/8 ratchet and 3/8 socket set laying down! You need to try the drawers out before complaining I think.

I like a fair few shallow drawers, hate boxes with too many deep drawers as I don't like stuff stacked .
You going need take some time plan how use drawers to maximum advantage/preference .
Pliers racks can save fair bit of space but need a semi deep drawer for those .
Consumable items like cable ties in retail bags don't go in my boxes but in metal filing cabinet, i got 3 large and 2 small filing cabinets that hold consumables and some specialist tools in blow moulded cases ...

if its 29" deep , its not a krl722 it would be a krl7022. Same depth as the 1001, 1022 models but 4" shorter in height

Good call. I took a closer look and I had missed the zero. It is indeed a krl7022.
