Used Snap-On KRL Series Box Advice

I'm looking at buying a used KRL1022 Master's Series box. As this is my first venture into purchasing a piece of used Snap-On equipment, I'm looking for some assistance from those that have experience in this area.

It's currently listed at $3,750 marked down from the original asking price of $4,500 and MSRP new is $9,700. From the pictures it appears to be in pristine shape. The seller doesn't know the date of manufacture which tells me it's fairly old or at least he's not the original owner and has had it for a while. The serial number starts with a "J" and from research I believe that would make it a 2001 model. I plan to call Snap-On to see if they will confirm this.

I've also considered an essentially brand new KCP2422 listed for $3,500. Used in good condition they go for around $2,300-$2,500.

As one can imagine, price comparison nationally is all over the place. The question is, knowing that the Master's Series is a superior product and more space than that of the Classic, is a "potentially" 19 year old box in excellent condition a decent buy at a start-to-negotiate price of $3,750? My sense is that it's a bit on the high side. Thank you.

If you are buying it to use and not resell, then buy what you like that fits your needs.
Spending a little more or less will not matter 30 years down the road.

First thing you got realise is they ain't 9K
You looking around high 5 to low 6K off the truck pending on deals and exact spec .

If it had a proper easy life and 100% mint and I mean proper original mint with good original drawer liners and so forth then it will fetch good money .
3,750 is rather high, I could see some paying 3,500 if comes with butcher block top and vise, but I wouldn't want pay over 3K if it mint and wanted one badly but that just me.
Having said that it is a cracking box and if like new condition you got a very nice product for even 3.5K .
Really depends on your needs/desires
Snapon boxes do demand higher used market prices due to brand box reputation and general branding high status .
I've seen these in past around 2K with nice example 2.5K .
It will hold good value but 3,750 is super high but if it on your doorstep, color you want and absolute like new condition with original liners then it can be worth making higher offer .
I'd rather spend 3K on used mint KRL box than on new import boxes .
You never really loose buying quality tidy used boxes it just if over pay you going have absorb some deprecation much like when buying new while if get at average used pricing you can flip box decade down the road for same you paid for it or perhaps more .

I’ve spent the last several months looking for a MINT Snap On box to upgrade to as I’ve grown out of my KRA2411 (Classic 78). I came to the realization that you either will end up with junk or dealing with owners over valuing their SO box. My definition of MINT and most sellers is very different.

I ended up with a Tool Vault Elite XL 84”. This was cheaper than what I was finding for used Snap On boxes of similar size and configuration. It also showed up to my door so I didn’t have to take a day to drive, load and haul a box home.

I cannot believe how well built this box is. It’s every bit as nice as the Snap On boxes if not better. It arrived in perfect condition, is clean, and has excellent drawer liners. Things that likely wouldn’t happen if I had purchased a used box.

I purchased from Strictly Toolboxes. I’d advise you to at least take a look at these boxes before you spend $3K or more.

That's a great looking box for the money and you know it's a quality piece. If you can afford the expenditure, then I'd do it.

I have a very similar box, slightly different drawer configuration, mine is a KRL1002. It's an incredibly good box. I paid obscenely low for mine, slightly under $1000. I'd expect $2500 to $3000 if I was to resell.

My opinion: The box is worth the premium it brings over a new, lower quality box. For instance, I wouldn't trade mine for 5 HF boxes, at about equivalent cost. I wouldn't ever think or say "I'll take a double bank US General, they're just as good, you're just not paying for the name".

The box is a heavy duty, solid performer with a lot of usable storage room. The 30 inch depth is real nice for holding more stuff, as long as you have the room for a 30 inch box. Mine holds a huge amount of weight; fully loaded it weighs about the same as a car, when I've moved mine I've used my car hauler, winch it up on just like a car, unload the same way.

i wouldn't pay a $1 over $3500 for that box and that is only because it has the wood top and looks to be in very good condition.

call snap on credit and make sure there isn't an open loan on that serial #.

Good thought. I came across these and did some research. They seem to get great reviews. The hesitancy came down to not knowing much about the brand. I too have seen the range of SO junk and ludicrous pricing on boxes in lousy condition.

SO corp did confirm the box I'm looking at was made in 2005.

I paid $2800 for mine in similar condition with the hardwood top. They guy wanted $4K but I told him 28 was all I could do. The tops are an additional $400-500. I do wish very much that second drawer down was the same size as the top one. There are a bunch of used ones on Ebay to give you a better idea of prices.

If you want any detailed pictures or info I’d be glad to share some. I’ve only had the box a week but I continue to be impressed by the quality, build, materials, finishes and drawer bearings and latch system.

I too was leary of the brand but took the leap based on the reviews. I now see why it gets those reviews...

In 15 years my Tool Vault box will look brand new. I am meticulous with how I care for things. On top of that the build quality leads me to believe it will not wear out any faster than the equivalent Snap On box.

I could care less what the value is in 15 years.

My point simply is to look at the Tool Vault Elite boxes closer. Many here will be very surprised if they can get past the fact that they don’t say Snap On outside.

And I am a huge Snap On fan boy. 75% of the tools in my box are Snap On. I just couldn’t justify spending significantly more for a Snap On box.

I'd be concerned about how that map holder (or whatever it is) is attached to the left side of the box. I'd also be concerned about how the vise is attached to the top of the box; meaning, does the bolt holes go through the butcher block and then all the way through the top of the box? if so, that takes away from its originality.

I wouldn't go over three thousand. That's a fair price for it. Figure out how you're going to move it or have it moved before committing.

As for the price, think of it this way...how many people are going to be lining up with that kind of money to buy it?

I have the exact same box in red. Great box for the money. Out here in Commiefornia, I see that box used quite often for around $2,000.00 to $2,800.00. Mines cherry & I would probably sell it for around $2,275.00, (if I was to sell it).

I still have my SO taco box from the 70's and was able to get slides for it a few years ago. Yet I can't get parts for my laptop from two years ago.
Many years ago I rode my taco box down the hill to a different shop, and I had a car try to block my way, yelled I am a toolbox with no brakes. He moved.
But what I have done to SO boxes others did not survive.
I have given away Husky, Craftsman, waterloo and general boxes they just couldn't take the abuse.

Had made a comment a while back if I spent all the time taking pictures I would have missed what went on, and I am sure if I had a camera all the time the interactions I have had with people would not have gone the same way.

I have this exact box in my garage right now bought it for 1800 last year. I know I got a steal. I would pay up to 2500 for it. 3000 If it’s in great condition and the color you want and everything else. But that’s in my area of Texas I don’t know what the going rates are in your area. In my area I guess no one has cash because people have had their toolboxes for sale for years on craigslist and offer up. iMessage them two years later and ask if they have it and they say yes but they’re not coming down on the price .
