There are SO many used boxes on the market, why not try to hold out until you find a mint one? Better to pay slightly more for a mint box, than to buy one that needs work. Most of the newer Snap-on boxes are powder coated, so even if you can match the exact PPG color, the finish will never look the same or be as durable if you have to do body work.

Due to the poor economy, this is a buyer's market for toolboxes. You can generally buy any box you want for absolutely no more than 25% of new price in mint condition, sometimes much less for 'motivated' sellers. Just be a patient shopper. If it were me, I'd be looking in CL for about a three state radius. This is a major purchase, and a bit of a drive is worth the trouble.

$400 to $600 is the fair range IMO. Doesn't mean you can't find a better deal on a similar box, or a nicer box, but for those 4 pieces there, somewhere between 4 and 6 should leave both parties satisfied.

If it were internally fine, I'd have no prob. with the $699 though I'd try to bargain. I don't have as much experience with those models but they're built like tanks. And the middle box is hard to find. I'd pay $600 if I really wanted it and assuming that the insides were in alignment. I just posted a similar post on restoring KR 537/557 combos (which I've now done 3 separate times -- though these boxes you post here are earlier and from my limited experience built more solid) and the work involved in that. So that influences the price to me.
