Hi everyone. I've been in the market for a use box and don't exactly know where to start. The SO truck quit coming to our facility a few years ago. Bought my last box over 20 years ago. It's an old (1980) SO, built like a tank but I need/want something larger and easier to use. Any advise on where to search other than Craigslist?? I know it sounds somewhat generic but there has to be a market for these somewhere. Thanks for your time. SL.

Hi, welcome

Where are you located? Do you have a particular box in mind? Sadly craigslist is one of the better places to find a deal on a used box. Every once in a while someone will luck into a cheap box via ebay or a local pawn shop, but YMMV. Then there is always garage sales, but it is pretty late in the year for that.

What 80's box do you currently have? What don't you like about that box? According to most, some of those 80's boxes are tanks compared to some of the more modern boxes. :dunno:

There is always the new route, of which many folks are happy with the HF44" for ~$350. While it isn't the best box out there. For the money, new it is very hard to beat.

A new site is

http:freetoolshopper.com/tools/

If you've got the time, estate sales/garage sales/auctions will eventually turn up something.

Don't limit yourself to Snap-on. Matco, Cornwell, MAC, Remline, Kennedy all are out there. A few years back, Costco had some offshore Hammerhead stainless boxes which were professional quality.

Also, don't limit yourself to one huge box or combo. Two or more normal size work just as well for most of us.

Over the past fifteen years, I've picked up four Snap-on top/bottom combos at bargain prices. I've finally got more drawer space than tools.

Look on eBay and do a search by distance so you are just looking at what is near you.
Sometimes where you are keeps the price down because people don't want to ship big items.

This. I bought a nice KRL 1022 on ebay like this. I went and inspected a box that was local and waited for the auction to end and then made a deal with the seller. Worked out good for both of us.

well,

all depends on how big of a box you're looking for
where you're located
how deep, (or shallow), your pockets are
how much space you have available...

I'm in central NC. I've had my heart set on a nice, SO box since I went to work in 84'. I'll post a pic of my old box. The top box has six small drawers 3 wide, 2 rows, then three full width under them. The box top covers the drawer faces when closed. Bottom has 6 full width drawers of various depths with the bottom one about 8" deep or so. I've seen tens of thousands of $$$'s spent on exotic boxes where I work, but never dove into one.thanks for the responses. This seems to be a friendly sort of forum. I've dealt with numerous not so nice ones in the past. SL.

Sounds like a KRA59 top and a matching 27" wide bottom. Are you wanting a top/bottom set or a bottom only/work bench type setup?

The best advice I could give you is to figure out what you want( rough size, functions, drawer layout), how much you want to spend, then start looking (craiglist, ebay, local magazine type advertisers, etc) and BE PATIENT. It took me years but I put together this three piece snap on set, never paying more than 45% of new cost and all three peices were in awesome condition. They are out there you just have to look and wait for them...

I'd be very patient and shop craigslist religiously. There are deals to be had but you can't expect it tomorrow. Doesn't sound like it's a problem for you though. If you've got a smartphone or tablet, get a craigslist app. The let you save searches and notify you when a new listing hits matching your criteria. Don't be too specific in your search though, as I'd rather search through a few more listings than miss a really good deal.
