I'm tagging along next week while my wife is working in London, so I will be on my own most of the weekdays. Any interesting places where I might find used tools etc?

Are there pawn or thrift shops?

Hi

where in London are you staying - it's a big place

pawn shop here seem to deal mainly with gold and playstations

charity/thirft shop tend to sell anything worth having through e-bay now, to get more for it.

The place to buy used tools are 'boot' sales, usually held at weekends in car parks/fields.

Best old stuff is anything you find by Britool or SP.

Even at markets and car boot sales you'll mostly find power and woodworking tools. Ebay and autojumbles account for much of the second-hand mechanics' tool trade.

If you're in central London you're probably going to be limited to new tools, Buck and Ryan, near the British Museum, is worth a look round. They have (or had, I haven't been in for about 18 months) a good range of Wera and Stahlwille.

[Heresy] There are a million things in London more interesting than trawling round tool shops, though [/heresy]

Most of our stay we will be at the Hilton Tower Bridge, but I usually put a few miles on my shoes and get a tube pass of some kind.

Where do I find out about boot sales?

Coming to London, eh? You poor *******!

Boot sales are usually in fields off f motorway junctions.. Usually advertised by signs at the roadside.

If you're staying near Tower Bridge, wander down to Design Museum, always worth a look, and the Borough Food Market is good fun on Fri/Sat/Sun. If you feel lik doing a little tube travel and want to see some awesome stuff, go and see the Kew Bridge Steam Museum. It's like nothing else, i may even be going there soon if you want some company. :)

Buy yourseld an Oyster card, it's a pre-pay card for busses/trains/tube. Halves the cost of travel.

Shoot me a PM if you want to grab a drink with one of the crazy locals. I'm in North-West London, 10 mins from Hampstead tube station on the Northern Line. :)

When the chaos level drops a bit I may find out what I will be doing, but so far all I know is where we will "mostly" be staying. First thing I may go looking for is a cheap hat for the rain, I'm not much for umbrellas, and do like to walk rain or shine (or sleet or snow or ? Maybe I should have been a postman).

This is my third week or longer trip, so I am starting to get to know most of the city, if it didn't keep changing.

I'm starting to work on a USB thumb drive right now, seeing if I can get my bookmarks and email stuff ready for plug in use in net cafe's.

The other place to look for boot sales is local papers in newsagents. Well all our local ones are advertised in here

Ah one thing I forgot to mention- I think it is a little early in the year for boot sales. They tend to start at the beginning of May

Trips so far is an adventure, bought new heavy coats, left them at home on the drive to the airport, so freezing running around in my son's hoodie fleece jacket found in cars trunk at the airport parking lot.

Today is first day of "real" internet access, ending in 5 min.;)

OTOH no rain so far, and wifes work schedule about to wind down for rest of trip..

Wife rules the museum route, Albert and Victoria, and some other institute today.

Staying the last few days in Maida Vale, just fifteen or so min of rain so far, but my feet are DEAD. When we got back to the hotel Sat evening, I found out a few min away every Sat is a school parking lot boot sale.

I haven't seen as much as a screwdriver in over week, looking forward now to home and messing on my cars to recover from vacation.

When I get home, planning on finding a place to post some picts and rattle on about the trip.
