I have been searching for a used triple bank box, I'm not to hooked on a brand, nothing fancy, if it has lockers or a hutch I take that into consideration. I'd like to get a new extreme box but I'm cheap lol. I have been searching high and low and can't believe some of the prices I see. Are majority of these boxes just way over priced? I know they are big money off the trucks but with the rebates and so on guys are getting good deals. It seems they are asking used prices for what the rebates are offering for new boxes. I'm trying to really stay between 2-3K on a box and I'm seeing 12-14 year old boxes guys are still asking 3-5K hinging on the fact that they paid 10K for them in 2000.

So are majority of these guys way out of line or am I just that cheap?

They're dreaming in my opinion. It ***** when you spend 25K for a SnapOn box and keep it nice only to not be have to sell it for less than half. I bought a used (3 months old ) Matco triple bank with a hutch that retails for close to 18K for $5200. It's damn near new, blue hammered finish that the kid didn't like when it got delivered. The Matco guy really needed to get rid of it and I got a screaming deal. Timing is everything I guess.

I've seen guys wanting 10K for a double bank SO thats a couple years old.

I would say at 3k-4k for a triple bank is not dreaming. Even with age they are worth quite a bit. I think you are being cheap! Location makes a difference too. Where I have lived not many boxes come up so the prices are high. Used epiq triple banks are listed for 8-9K. See lots of other triples in the 5-6K range.

There's asking and there's getting. Around here the $3000+ ones sit on CL forever, the more realistic priced ones actually sell. Need to have a little patience and check CL a couple times a day, the best deals go fast.

I understand 3-4k for one that's not 12-15 years old. I saw a used epiq for 4500 the other day with the power top. That seemed like a fair deal for it from what I'm reading on here. Just more then I wanted to spend. I see triple bank krl's with hutches asking 8500 cause it sold MSRP for 16k or something. Yet with the rebates the guy actually got it for 7000 or something.

I think some are in line just far away. But I see krl722 asking 4500-6500 I'm blown away. Even my own box I am pricing based on others. I think I'm asking to much but if no one ever makes an offer I can't accept or deny it.

Some prices just blow my mind like a bridesmaid at a wedding.

This is what I'm doing. It drives the wife crazy. And also guys list them wrong, they don't list them under tools so sometimes you gotta dig deeper.

Judge . . . . since you travel all over with your trucking business, you have unique advantage to LOOK EVERYWHERE !! Heck you could use the "GJ Highway" and buy a bargain toolbox that may take a while to "hitch a ride" between fellow GJer's until it gets to point where the Judge long tractor can give it a ride back home !! ;)

Post up a WANTED spec of toolbox you are after . . .
. . . . and see what the collective eyes of GJ can help you find !!

I know your right and I take that into consideration...although then I run into the craigslist deal where I can't get there right away and the guy wants to sell it asap and its gone right away. I missed a KRL1001 with a side locker last week, it was exactly what I wanted and the price was too but I couldn't get to Cleveland for a couple days and missed out.

I have not posted in the want ads yet, I just started this search. I do have a post for a KRL791 top or a side locker and they just keep my 761 but that's not looking to promising there either. People are wanting almost as much for a top or a locker as a used triple bank. Like I said some of these prices are out of this world. I'm meeting with my snap on guy in a couple hours at my dads to discuss my options to see if he has anything used. I really don't want to spend that kind of coin on a new box, in fact the wife more then likely won't allow that and honestly I'm ok with that.

One thing I think over inflates prices is dealer trade in quotes. If a guy talks to a dealer on trading in, dealers can work magic with numbers giving sky high trade in values to intice a guy to buy. This may give the seller inflated head on what his box is worth without unstanding the true number game the dealer played. I have traded boxes in for more then I paid new.

I agree with the OP. In this area (NYC metro) prices for used KRLs are about the same or higher than my SnapOn man offered me a brand new KRL1023 for, ordered in the color of my choice. And that's without even haggling with him. I'll buy new, just waiting for the right time...since I want the box, I don't need it.

Cedar Rapids Iowa craigslist has a 1 year old Snap On Classic 96 for $4500 OBO,right now. I have nothing to do with this box or the person selling it.

I also see those 10-15-20+ year old 3-5k SO boxes regularly around my area. Some of them I've seen being posted over a year.

I think it's because listing on Craigslist if free that people just put up whatever indefinitely.

Also, listing price is one thing but when you're actually in front of the seller. Man, that number often goes down fast.

You wanna wear a seller down? Call up a couple of friends and set up a few phony really low ball offers face to face (throw in a couple of no shows) and then you go in with the best of the low ball offers...

I haven't watched box prices in years so I don't really know what stuff goes for but I would expect condition to effect price more than age. With the exception of roller slides it's not like a new box has features that significantly improve functionality over one made 50 years ago. I've got three main boxes that I use daily. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=677390&postcount=32 The newest is 20 years old and functionally is as good as a new box.

+1... My first box was a Craftsman I got off the SnapOn guy in the shop I was working...he had given the tech $1500 trade value on it, and offered (sold) me the box for $350 if he didn't have to load it on the truck...

Not to mention...if a guy is actively working in a shop and using his box every day, he just cant sell it tomorrow, put all his tools in cat litter pails and work like that for 3 months till his new one comes in. Combine that with the very high magic trade in numbers, and you can see why there aren't (IMHO) a lot of clean/late model boxes on CL for reasonable money.
90% of the boxes on CL are from kids who dropped out of tech school or guys who quit that line of work.

All the deals I've seen have been off the trucks. Also works just putting a bug in the guy's ear...my former SO guy knew I wanted a Macsimizer MB1860 or similar...he could use that knowledge to try to sweeten the deal for some tech on his route who had the box I was looking for...knowing it was pre-sold...etc..

It's been my experience as well that sellers usually want way too much for them. I also notice they sit on CraigsList forever.

This is the kind of nonsense I see all the time :spit:

I see this as well. The best one i saw a couple days ago, was a beat up classic 96 for 6500 bucks. You can buy them off the truck cheaper.

What a joke!

If they were your boxes and you were selling them What would you ask for them. I don't think asking 1/3 of what they paid for them to much.

Buy a hf box if your cheap. And it sounds like you are.....

Different price range, but I've got a Kennedy that was $700 new, but I couldn't get $100 for it on craigs. I gave up and took the wheels off and bolted it to the floor of my van. Very handy!

Around here, craigs users seem to think it's the lottery. I routinely see things for sale for MORE than you can buy it for new. There are bargains, but you have to be both patient and fast to get 'em.

Its just a matter of time and patience. And it all depends how desperate one is to sell the box. There are shops closing everyday and they need to get rid of equipment. Keep looking and you will find one in your price range. Are these boxes overpriced? Absolutely they are. If all fails for them money you are welling to spend go to Harbor Freight and get you a very nice setup.

Here is a tool box on Craigslist which makes me laugh: $500 for a used tool box. It is a 44" Harbor Freight US General, which sells for $390 NEW. It is tempting to ask the seller if he will take a 25% off HF coupon to get his used box down to $375, lol...

As mentioned, patience, timing and luck are needed to find the right box at the right price on CL. Also, be proactive and put a "wanted to buy" ad on CL and see what is offered.

I'm not that cheap. I'll spend the money on a good box. I just have to find it.

I'm asking for my krl what I was seeing them go for last time I looked. I passed on a triple bank Marco yesterday it had almost all narrow depth drawer and I need some deeper 4" drawers.

The classic 96 is a kra right? Not the highest of quality if I'm reading right? There is a Mac tech 1000 close by for 2k I may inquire about it as well and I found a white tech 1000 on Craigslist for 2700 6 months old also.

Just missed out on mine that I had for sale. Sold it a couple weeks ago for 5k. I think I was reasonable on it.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1424869376.353390.jpg

I honestly didn't know it was for sale. I missed your for sale thread. That's way more box then I need but I could have worked with it!! The finished product appeared to come out real good.

My buddy just bought a 72" tool vault with a hutch for 3700 I'm considering that as well. I'd rather have the extreme though.

Remember list price and what you pay can be two very different numbers. When I was looking for an Epiq I was in a bit of a hurry as I was moving from a very populated area to an area out in the sticks. I was making offers on boxes everyday and getting turned down. Came across a husband/wife selling his box. I got all the details from the woman. Didn't make an offer just let it sit for a day or so. She texted me at 6am an offer out of the blue that was 3500 less than asking price and about 500 more than I wanted to pay. I offered back what I was willing to pay and they took my offer.

If you're looking for the really good deals, you need to revise that to "check CL a couple times an HOUR."

Cedar Rapids Iowa craigslist has a 1 year old Snap On Classic 96 for $4500 OBO,right now.
I bought my 1-year old Classic 96 for $1300. Along with the paperwork from the dealer showing it was paid for. So there are deals out there, but many of them are sold before you'll ever see them, if you're not paying attention constantly. What you see are the ones that sit there forever and never sell because they're overpriced.

I haven't run across that yet but anything can happen!!

My snap on guy yesterday told me he would give me 3K trade on my krl761 and made it very clear...It's not worth that but I can make it look good on paper. So people need to realize what these dealers are doing to give adequate pricing.

The ones that also kill me are the limited edition ones. I'm sorry but to me that adds no value. It's not a 57 chevy its a toolbox. The fact that someone has number 368 or 400 of this edition just tells me that there are 399 other people that fell into the same line of limited edition.

A friend of mine bought his first box from the Snap On guy, a white KRL722 with a bedliner top for $1800 about two years ago and had been ogling Epiqs ever since. Well, about a week ago he traded the 722 (in mint condition) for a 60" Epiq for, get this: $4500 trade in value. That left a debt of about $5000. A lot of money for marginal increase in box size. My friend argues that it's twice the capacity of his old box, but it only has like two or three more drawers so he really isn't getting twice as much tool storage. It's no wonder our SO guy is so wealthy. He knows what he's doing.

I think them epiq boxes are 30" deep and the 722 is 25. The difference would be in the extra deep drawers and the extra 2 drawers. I believe you on the trade in but if he goes to sell it he will want 7500 for it and it will sit for sale forever because you can get the same deal for a brand new one from Snap on.
