Finding a triple bank KRL under $3k is a challenge, but it can be done. Probably will be red at that price, as it may be an older box, but nothing wrong with an older, well cared for KRL unless you really don't like red. (For years, you could have your toolbox any color you wanted as long as it was red.) Expand your CL search to about 5 states, and be ready for a long trip. I've paid as little as $2,500 for an older red KRL (29" deep box). A factor is if it has a stainless steel top. When I have sold KRL triple banks, with SS top they've sold for $3,900 to 4,500. About $500-700 less without the top.
Keep in mind, I'm in a VERY good location to sell a box, (well populated area), and some of the best deals I've gotten buying boxes have been in remote areas. Also, another thing is that most of the time I buy boxes full of tools. A package price ALWAYS brings the best price. My current toolbox I got almost for free, and I paid 7k with it loaded with tools, and sold the tools for about double that on eBay. Free box. When I buy complete loaded toolboxes, all the tools I sell off separately on eBay. Then thoroughly clean the box, fix any broken parts, and sell the box in the best condition possible. I won't ever buy a box in shabby condition, too hard to move.
Another decent option would be a Classic 96 instead of a KRL. 95% as solid as a KRL, and has Lock-N-Roll and roller slides. Damn nice boxes, (but 24" deep). I just sold a pristine, brand-new condition one for $2,600, but I still made some money on that, (I would have asked a bit more if it wasn't to a friend.)
Never be afraid to make a low offer, and if you're constantly searching, you will begin to recognize the ones that have been sitting on CL for a long time. Perhaps ready to face reality. Or their annoyance level is getting to just the right point, (if you have a KRL triple bank in a one car garage, the wife is getting pissed she still can't park her car inside, etc...) Sometimes it takes a bit of explaining to make a seller realize it's not really worth what they think. Show them "Sold Listings" for similar boxes on eBay. (Generally eBay prices are somewhat lower than you'd think as shipping a KRL box is beyond most seller's capabilities.) As mentioned above, patience is critical.
