Used Torque Wrench Question

Hello everyone,

I am fairly new to GJ and this is my first post.

I bought my first split-beam style torque wrench today. I got a used Snap On TQFR250 in really nice condition for $90. I thought that was very fair.

I'm going to get it calibrated, but I had a question about the dial for those who are more familiar with this style of torque wrench- is it normal, when turning the screw/dial, for oil to be visible on the gauge wheel? It seems like normal operation since the window is open to where the moving parts are, but as I said, I've not owned this style of TW before. I'm awfully particular about my tools.

Thanks in advance for the help, cheers.

I would consider it normal. If you send it for calibration and they find something they don't like, they'll let you know.

Is it a lot of oil or just a film? I don't see any oil on the dial of my Precision Instrument split beam.

It's not really a lot or a little...just a light coating that is picked up when the dial is rotated through its full range.

As a side note...I did a crude functionality check of the TW on my truck. I put my lug nuts back on Sunday with a known good TW to 100 ft-lbs. The Dodge factory service manual specifies 85-115 ft-lbs. I took the TQFR250 and set it to 105 ft-lbs, and put it on the truck. They budged ever-so-slightly and the wrench clicked. So, as a crude measure, it's in the ballpark.

I really like the split beam type in that you don't need to dial them down after use.
