Am I the only one noticing a pattern of the people selling used HF toolboxes (44/56/72) on sites lite Craigslist asking for basically 'coupon' prices for their boxes while respected name brand boxes are like new cars where they depreciate as soon as you own them? I would have really thought the reverse would be true. I don't know if these boxes ever sell but I've been deal looking for a bigger box on a budget and when the HF boxes are posted I'm always shocked at the price. Guess it is time to save more and either buy new HF or used Matco/Proto/Kennedy/Mac/Snap-on.

Thinking the quality boxes are being sold from pros upgrading (need the space and money for the upgrade) or out of the business (need cash fast) where the HF boxes might be from homeowner's garages and they are in no rush to cut loose and take too big of a loss and are looking for top dollar (that or since they are not pros they have no concept of typical used toolbox depreciation).

That's like recently my local CL had an ad for the motorcycle lift and he was asking $250.00. I sent him a message offering $150.00 and he refused. I didn't feel like buying for a price that I could just wait a while and get a brand new one.

A week or so later, they had a sale so I got a brand new one for $300.00. I was happy to pay fifty bucks more for the warranty.

Just how much of a deal do you expect?

**** I tried to sell my one year old 56" top, bottom and 5 drawer cart in perfect shape for 900 OBO which I would have taken 800 and they looked almost brand new. So someone might think that isn't much of a deal but even at bottom dollar new plus tax that saves ya 4 bills at 900.

It is also the fact that everyone knows that the "Pro" grade tool truck boxes are way over priced to begin with so losing 3/4 to 1/2 their value is expected where as the HF boxes are so cheap to begin with that they do not have as far to fall.

In fact if you look at it from a % it is about equal new list vs new list.

Around here they slap a Snap-on plate on them and ask SO used prices...
Too funny.....we've seen the same ads as I'm also near Detroit. I also like the recent debadging (can see where the decals were) and then proclaiming that they don't know the brand.

Around here, the only boxes that you see used are old enough to have voted for Nixon, and all beat up, almost to the point of un repairable.

The others are either at full retail or above

HF boxes aren't worth much. beat them up, and sell it when you want to upgrade. they're not worth much, so they really depreciate.. but on the opposite side, i bought a brand new snap on box and i can't get even half of it back.

You rarely see used ones for sale around here. The last few I have seen were the red carts and the sellers wanted the same as a new one from the store. Recently, though, there was a 44" top and bottom that looked brand new on Craigslist for $450. That's a pretty good deal to me.

This is actually really simple...what can you get for less? Nothing comparable. So there's your bottom, and you're quite simply pricing it vs a new HF box. Find the sweet spot of cheap enough to buy used vs spend more cash to buy new.

Same thing here, used boxes advertised at stupid prices for all brands. I keep checking, but I have pretty much given up on finding a deal. When I save enough cash, I will pick up a new HF 44" roller. It is the most bang for the buck. :D
