If your trying to find replacement tips for the #38292 Craftsman 12 Oz. Mallet pictured below:

Don't even bother driving to Sears or checking their parts direct website.
They have been canceled and are out of stock. If you do an internet search there is a fair amount of results dedicated to how hard these are to find.

Instead, go to Vaughan's website.
They are the manufacturer of the Craftsman 12oz mallet, and their version (model SF12) uses the same press-fit tips and you can find replacements on their site.

About $2 each, so stock up.

Just an FYI, maybe now someone else won't get the run around like I did.

Hmmmm.

My Sears keeps those 12 oz hammers in stock all day. The tips as separate replacement parts are long gone. Prolly since last summer.

Hell, I warranteed one of my 12oz'ers out last month due to a split yellow tip.

Now they just warranty the whole hammer.
And the new ones have black heads, not grey.
Still lifetime warranty, no matter how worn out the tips become. Still USA made.
They just hand you a new hammer as a swap-out.

And yes, the Vaughn tips are teh same. I thought that was a known given to most users.

Yea, I knew that Sears still carries the hammer itself, I have 4 of them!

I have an older gray-headed one too, and I did not want to just 1 for 1 exchange it because my father gave it to me when I was a kid. Has a lot of sentimental value.

I also prefer to keep the hammer "body" because some of mine are required to be property marked... It gets old FAST having to get out the dremel engraver once a month!

My intention was just to let folks know that if they wanted to just replace the tips, there is an option without getting a whole brand new mallet.

I think the reason they stopped carrying them was described pretty well by jjjrmx5 above. The average user doesn't care or even know how to replace just the tips. They see craftsman and just swap it. Think hum free hammer or spend some money and time to repair the one I have. Sears probably could have saved some money had they re-headed them for folks but, well....

Can you post a pic of the hammer you have? I wonder what the time frame was on it. Kudos to you for saving something for sentimental value.

I definitely wouldn't put money against you... I'm sure as well that's why they stopped making the tips available!

Here's a photo of my old craftsman 12oz mallet... I have a few of the newer black ones, but this is my go-to.

My dad gave it to me when I was a youngster, maybe around 1995-ish?

I hope you weren't expecting a badass 1960s model or the like, I suppose when I say "when I was a kid" without everyone knowing my age many may think it's vintage... I'm only 27 now!

Very cool. Shoot you've got a few years on me, dang near all my tools are older than I am. If I ever find one of those old craftsman hammers cheap that needs heads I'd like to face off the square ends, tap and then make custom brass and nylon faces. Me thinks it'd be the only one on the block. :D

DUDE, that was my idea, haha!

Ive been wanting to turn one into a custom hickory handled gunsmithing hammer!

That why I bought a bunch more, I'm just trying to decide weights before I hack one apart and turn the brass heads on a lathe.

Great minds think alike, bro.

I know this is an old thread, but it helped me find the right replacement tips when I was searching online.

Zoro still carries Vaughn SF12 replacement tips for this old Craftsman 12 oz soft-faced mallet.

A vise is handy for removing the old tips and squeezing new ones into place. I know the old ones weren’t in bad shape, but I wanted to refresh the mallet regardless with stain, a fresh finish and new tips. IMG_4001.jpeg

When I bought replacement tips for my Craftsman SF12 from Zoro, I ordered an extra pair since I had to pay for shipping. Today (as posted in the Hammer thread) an old Vaughn SF12 came up for sale for $5.

It cleaned up well!
