Picked up a Dremel MM20 variable speed multitool today. I'm a lot better mechanic than carpenter, but could see this coming in handy at times.

Any "must-have" accessories? Any to avoid?

I found the scraper tool works well. I had 35 year old sound deadening material stuck to the inside of the body panels on an Austin Mini I am restoring. I couldn't find anything that would do a good job of taking it off. The scraper blade worked really well and actually made pretty quick work of it.

Just grab one of the kits that has a bit of everything. Believe me, you'll use it all and wonder how you lived so long without it.

Picked up the M12 Multi a few months back, and it's been awesome.

I use the diamond tile/grout tip quite often. I also use the scraper blade too, but I just use an old saw blade. That is the only drawback to these tools, if you hit a nail or two you loose teeth, but do not toss the blades. Once they are to worn out for cutting anymore, they work great for scraping.

If you need to cut masonry type stuff, then go for the diamond blades and not the carbide ones. In my experience the carbide just doesn't last.

Get yourself a large circular wood cutting blade. I can come in handy when you are "desperate" and need to do long cuts in a tight space.

The scraper/cutter blade is also a handy item.

I wouldn't say these are exactly must haves, but depending on what you do (I'm a remodeler) these items are good to have on hand. Eventually you'll find yourself using your multitool more and more as you figure out that these tools do all the small stupid things your other tools don't do.

+1. I don't throw out old blades. Grind large triangular teeth in then, and they become amazing at cutting wall board.

Aren't some of these oscillating tool attachments proprietary, depending on which brand you choose?

Will have to do this with some of my old worn out blades

Not really anymore, if your tool is new enough, all the bits I've seen are universal

I have wanted to silver solder on a bimetal blade to an old worn part for cutting small nails and other metal work.

I tig welded a section of a carbide tipped sawzall demolition blade to a worn out multitool blade. The results were AWESOME, several years ago when I did it. Since then, similar blades have hit the market.
