Useless tools

I want to know I am not alone in buying tools I have no use for but buy anyways. Yesterday I bought a brand new 1" drive Armstrong ratchet for $72. I have zero use for this, I don't have 1" sockets or even an adapter. Its just a 30" long drawer liner holder down. So what have you guys bought even though you where thinking to yourself, "where the @#$% am I ever going to use this?

I don't know about useless tools but I have bought tools that I don't have a use for right away. Like your ratchet, I wouldn't call it useless, I would buy an adapter and use it on 3/4" or 1/2" sockets. It'll be nice when you need the extra leverage. If I find a good deal on a tool I'll buy it even if I don't need it at the time, eventually all my tools get used sometime.

I have a 1" impact gun that I bought used, have never used it but someday if I ever buy a dumptruck, or have a really tough lugnut it will come in handy!

It may not be usefull now but one day you'll figure out a use for it and be glad you have it. For me I picked up this Wright 3/4" offset extension last weekend at the flea market. I couldn't think of use for it but the guy only wanted $3 for it so I bought it.

I'm trying to pay off my mortgage as quick as possible, and my wife needs a new car. So no, buying useless tools or ones you don't need is a complete waste of money. I've wasted a few bucks here and there but it was mostly to buy the "staples" and build up my tool set with common things that I didn't need right away. Beyond that, the money goes toward buying things we need.

i spent $75 on a huge SDS hammer that i still haven't found a use for but it retails for close to a grand so i couldn't pass it up. i also have a 3/4 socket set that i'll prob never use. but for $20 i couldn't pass it up.

I am almost always willing to buy something interesting at a good price. Pretty rare for well bought not to be profitable.

craftsman open end ratcheting wrenchs. by the time I fight them i might as well just do it old fashioned with a regular open end.

Unless it's a really good price and I may eventually have a use for it, I pass. Enough tools that I still need to buy that it doesn't make sense to buy tools I don't need.

yup same here; i got them for the fans on import trucks. They are useless except being pretty.
ive got more sets of sae 1/4 than i care to talk about
but for the most part i buy stuff i need or have a use for
I would have bought the ratchet too for that price; and i infrequently use my 3/4 set

No such thing as a useless tool, in my book. If it's quality, and a good deal, I buy it. Only thing useless in gimmicky tools, like mentioned. I haven't paid anyone to repair anything I own in 20+ years.

Since I only buy new when I have a job at hand that NEEDS to be done immediately, I would say no I dont buy useless tools. Most of my tools make money for me, even if I never use them as I buy used vintage domestic tools at what I (not the average consumer) consider a fair price, and can easily resell them for double or more.

Every tool has a price. An SK 45170 for $1. And I have no need for it? Heck, why not! Another pair of slip joint pliers? Channellock at $2. Can't pass that up. No name 16" Taiwan 1/2 drive breaker bar at $2? Walked away, wound up coming back for it later in the day.

I pieced together a USA 3/4 set probably 10 years ago. It has been used twice. Once, I loaned it to a coworker for an axle nut removal. The other time, I used it to install/remove a 2" ball hitch on my truck for towing.......Sometimes, big sockets come in handy......
However, around the same time, I put together a large USA sae wrench set, the largest of which is 2 3/16, I believe. Was paying in the range of $20 each for larger sizes. Don't think any of them have been used......

I started collecting my tools 5 years ago when I bought my own home. I do not use tools for a living but love to collect and use them. I have always hated borrowing. I try buy something every week, even if it is something simple as a glass drill bit. I have no use for it now, but when I do it will be there for me. Most of the tools I buy are on the medium to high end, Craftsman, Williams, Klein, Knipex, Bosh, Freud. Some day my two small children will have all the tools they need. To me it is an investment bordering on obsession.

I think I'd rather have $72 worth of Scotch and use a rock to hold the drawer liner down.

I've bought things I don't have an immediate use for, but I still run into enough "I wish I had one of those" moments...
