This may be obvious to some (most?) of you, but the older power bars can be modified to switch something remotely. It has to be one that is usually is made of sheet metal and has the standard duplex electrical outlets that you can swap out. I changed one with 4 duplex outlets for my mother so she can easily reboot her cable modem, router and network switch when she has an internet problem.
My shop vacuum lives on a shelf over my mower, behind the mower handle which is behind my toolbox. It's a little awkward to get to the power switch, so I'd been plugging it in and unplugging it. The I put a power bar in place and used the switch on that, but I'd have to unplug it when I used that power bar for something else. Now this is what I have, each switch controls the associated outlet.
