Hey all, updating the lighting in my basement and want to make sure I am on track. There is a ded 15 amp circuit for the basement lighting. It originally fed into a j box with a pull chain light and served as a junction for a switched circuit. I am essentially doing the same thing, but wasn't sure about the can light. Is it ok to use a can as a junction box? Attached schematic if it's helpful.open to any other feedback as well. I intend to have 2 switches at top of steps and divide basement in half by "banks "

As long as you're not exceeding the conductor box fill listed for that light, you should be good.

The can light should have a box attached to it. THAT box can be used as a junction box, so long as you're not exceeding the fill requirements.

BUT using the light can itself as a junction box is not ok.

Yes and per what TFI said. But I'm wondering why you're switching the light banks like that. In that configuration you'll never be able to have both banks on and what switch are you using. Unless you use a 3 way selector switch there is no off which is a problem.

Thanks all for the quick relies! I should have clarified there is a jbox on the can light that would be used.
LXCam- the idea is to have lights on/off at top of steps. I will eventually rewire it when I frame out for finish bsmt in a couple years. I will add some three way probably and redefine the zones when rooms are established. I got a good deal on the cans and wanted to upgrade from 3 pull chain lights.
I would have a feed going into the box , pigtail with a hot going to two single pole switches, then a separate wire off of each switch to feed each of the banks, connect the neutrals and grounds and then close it up and feed each can bank from the switched wires.

If that is a party foul, let me know.
