Using a window for a shed skylight?

I have an old rusty shed that I'm thinking of putting some time into --- holds the lawnmower, etc.

Also, I'm cheap.

Can I mount a window into the roof of this shed to get some light in there? Can find them on Craigslist pretty cheap ~ $20.

Thinking I might have to reinforce the roof to support the added weight.

Any advice?

No. Any glass that is overhead has to be laminated. If it breaks, laminated glass will not fall out on top of you. Very likely the glass in that window is annealed so it would fall in large pieces. Buy a piece of acrylic (plastic) -lexan etc. Get at home depot about the same price as that window.

If you want a skylight just buy one of those tube skylights.

Since sheds are always packed solid, what about window cut in doors? that window could be a lot of weight for the metal shed roof. Pics would help

Yes, there's no door currently, but I was going to build one and was thinking of building one around an existing window.

What's the roof made of?
I built a shed and made the roof from Suntuf corrugated polycarbonate. The whole roof is a skylight, but there's no reason you couldn't cut out a hole, and cover it with this stuff. Just make sure the top end is at the ridge, and add some flashing over the corner of the ridge so there's no place for water to run in.

Oh, and I went with the photo-grey, and not clear. A clear roof on a shed (or big skylight) turns it into a greenhouse. It gets real hot and stuffy in there real fast.

hi,since you do not have a door check craigs list for a FREE storm door. Most have glass in them. i got one for my shed this way. The only problem is getting it before scrap guys!

Plexiglas glass and lots of silicone worked for my chicken coop. It's not pretty but it holds up and works great

You could make some skylights out of old plastic soda bottles. I heard a report a while ago on NPR. They use them in areas around the world where there is not a steady electrical supply. Kind of cool....

I second Rlitman. I used poly down the lenght of my shed at the top of my walls to let some light in and it works great.

I have a old shed out back that I threw up quick, wanted some light inside, had a couple of old shower doors laying around. A little quick frame work and I have natural light inside of my $50 shed.

They have been in there for over 10 years now, hasn't fallen out and doesn't leak.
