I am going to be sheeting the exterior of my pole building this weekend. I planned on using ring shank nails in my framing nailer to attach the OSB to the 2"x4" girts. The shortest ring shank nail I can find is 2.375" which will go through my OSB and be sticking out the other side of my 2"x4" girt. What would you guys use in my situation. I was thinking of shooting the 2.375" nails crooked maybe that would stop them from sticking through to the inside of my building? Any information is appreciated.

Ok, thanks. I can't seem to find them at Lowes or my local lumber yard.

Use the online lowes/home depot or whatver you shop at store to see which in the area have them beware, if the store shows a qty of 1, have someone put hands on them before your drive there.

Yes same as my lowes. Looks like they only stock a few boxes of the 2". They may have been out when I was there. Says they have 2 boxes now. Another question I have about running my sheeting. My building is 27' long and the walls are 12' high. I was wondering if I should run my sheeting vertical the whole length then on the last four feet at the top run a row horizontal. I am only going to have a 3' piece at the end since my building is an odd ball length. Or I could just run three rows horizontal.

if your girts are 16" oc then I would run horizonal, stager the joints.

not sure but if it's 24" oc I would think you'd want to go vertical, and stager

The OSB should have it's shear strength direction printed on the sheets. Horizontally is the only way I've seen it printed, but yours could be different. Shear strength is what you're after.

The strength axis on OSB is not shear strength but resistance to sagging as in OSB used acrossed floor joist or roof trusses/rafters. Shear resistance is equal and OSB may be installed horizontally or vertically. It's typically done vertically with 10'-12' or 14' long OSB panels as there is much les cutting and waste. Any lumber yard worth a spit can order these lengths and it's worth the small up charge.

But please see page 23 of the Teco OSB design and application manual.

While your at it buy a siding nailer that can use proper length nails.

Use it and list it for 50$ less than new. Someone will grab it and maybe be close or cheaper than a couple days rental.

I have a 28 degree wire weld, but found that a better selection of sheathing nails was available for a coil framing nailer so I bought that as well. 1-1/2" can be ordered online. Our local stores only carry 2-3/8" and longer. To get to 2" or 1-3/4" locally, a coil siding nailer is required.

And, as mentioned... OSB has the same shear strength in both directions, because each ply is oriented 90 degrees to the next. Typically for a wall, if you are using 4x8 sheets it is best to have it horizontal so there is not a full seam every 4 feet but a half seam.
