Insulating my pole barn soon, and wondering is it ok to use housewrap on the walls before I put the insulation up as the vapor/condensation barrier?

Something along the lines of tyvek would make quick work of doing this.

When I had mine built I had wrap installed on the exterior before the exterior metal was installed. This was done to help with moisture movement and more important to me the movement of air within the wall cavity. Just remember that wraps will allow moisture to move in one direction when installing it. If air movement is of concern then proper taping is required. Controlling moisture and air movement within a wall cavity will improve the energy efficiency of the wall. To answer your question more directly, a house wrap is the proper material to use in your situation. Just remember to have the printed side face away from the insulation.

Tyvek is NOT a vapor barrier. It should be used on the outside to prevent air and water from going in, but it will let vapor escape.

Polyethylene (6 mil) vapor barrier (among others) is used on the inside to keep air AND moisture from entering or leaving the house.

Yes Tyvek does NOT Stop Snow/Rain coming threw! Now insulate,6" then 4 mil plastic, tin wall, should, stop the "neg"(-) psi coming in,I've not had any leaks since the contractor could NOT finish there work,of tin not sealing.I used spray sealant(not spray foam) along the seams to some better seal.I'll know this winter(Iowa)After $22,000 contractor "didn't know what to do"but still charged me for practicing==. Contracting Kinda'like Health Ins. Practioning Medicine.I'm sure I miss spelled some words, sorry!

So what would you recommend to use as a vapor barrier before insulation goes up. Garage has been built for 3 years so no way I can get paper outside of the purlins between wall and them.

I put tyvek between posts up against purlins and tacked to posts then insulated to help keep air from moving thru insulation, degrading performance. Vapor barrier between wall board and insulation, especially if you have any perforations in wallboard. If good wallboard with multiple paint coats you probably don't need vapor barrier ,unless you have dirt floor or wash items a lot in building.

Build with block. Fill the block with Styrofoam peanuts. Paint inside and out with Sherwin Aqua block. Cheaper and it wont bur to the ground when someone fores a bottle rocket. Don't forget the V crimp metal roof

I like all of the Ideas, maybe "looking Back" Spray Foam would have been the Better Choice (Know it's costly too),hope of the Best!
