This is my first time doing this so this is probably a dumb question. The boxes have 2 spacer ridges to allow the box to sit 3/8" proud of a stud. If I am using 1/2" drywall should I set it back another 1/8" or am I fine w/ the box recessed that 1/8"

Thanks much,

Dave

Generally set at 3/8". 1/2 does not allow for any error so you better be right on. If you spend the extra time to recheck the distance you will be fine but that isn't a good use of time for most pro's. Nec allows 1/4" gap so 3/8 is right in the middle.

Thank you. So if one were to install 3/8" drywall wouldn't you be in the same predicament w/ having to be perfect to prevent the box from being proud of the drywall?

Would be pretty rare to use 3/8 for walls. These boxes are designed for common builds.

Ahh so even though the molded spacer is 3/8" for the box, that's actually designed for the 1/2" drywall?

If you space the boxes a little proud of 1/2", a belt sander fixes the issue pretty quick, but it's less time consuming to just use the spacer guide.

Of course I placed boxes with a scrap piece of 1/2" OSB as a guide but I've gone "round the bend" long ago...

Little late - but they do make adjustable 'new work' boxes. They are a little more expensive, but you can set them so they are flush with the studs, mark the location, install the drywall and then once you cut the hole for the box, you use the screw to bring the box forward flush with the drywall

I am using the above adjustable boxes for a wall that requires OSB and drywall on the inside for structural purposes. Too pricey to use everywhere...
