I built a section of fence & a gate last fall & decided to use pocket hole type connections vs the flimsy little tin, store bought corner brackets that i've used way to often with less than satisfactory results
No jig required
Tools: a 7/8" spade or brad point bit, a long 5/32" drill bit & an impact wrench with socket to match the lag bolts you use
Auger bits split the 2x6 were the spade or brad point just dig a nice hole
To start, drill the 7/8" hole back a couple inches on the horizontal board about 1/" - 3/8" deep then turn it to a 45 degree angle & drill just enough to bury the lag bolt & flat washer, then use the 5/32" drill to predrill the both the horizontal & vertical boards (while holding them inline with each other) to prevent cracking
I used 6" x 5/16 galvanized lag bolts & corresponding flat washers. Line it up & giver with your impact wrench. It really makes nice solid corners on the fence sections & gate. Yes i installed a wheel because the gate is heavy, 8' wide & is at a rental property with young children which I anticipate may enjoy standing on it while being pushed to & fro
Note: when sending the lag bolt home, start the horizonal board a tad high (1/4" - 3/8" ish) of where you want it to end up as it will slide down a little bit as tightened, don't be shy with your impact, giver'
Hope this helps someone build better fences & gates or gives you ideas to make them even better
Cheers
